This hotel is an extraordinary mix of very high standards in important areas and a few fundamental weaknesses that seem fully avoidable. It borders on 5-star in most of the important aspects that matter to prospective guests.

Bedrooms are top class: spacious, tastefully furnished, huge comfortable beds. The large bathrooms are outstanding: large bath (which converts to jacuzzi), large separate shower unit with fixed and hand-held fittings - great pressure, twin basins, sophisticated lighting controls. Carpeting throughout is highest quality, the painting of corridors and bedrooms impeccable. All so far well up to many 5-star establishments.

Odd then that the quality of art is not just poor: it wouldn't be out of place in an unlisted B&B or even a student-shared room in a Mon-Fri boarding house. Cheap prints of clichéd images from poster shops in matching frames abound in the public spaces. A bleached Caravaggio is fixed permanently 6 inches above another permanently fixed sign for Live Music. The few "original" artworks (in the dining room) are equally disappointing. It is strange that an establishment that has got much harder things so right should fall down on things that are easily remedied without spending a fortune. There is plenty of real art available at very manageable prices. How about it Knockranny?

However, art aside, this is a really fine hotel. From check-in to check-out the service is excellent. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent and very good value. Every dish was delicious and I will review it separately under "restaurants". A great chef and excellent service. Breakfast, unfortunately, competes with the art in the disappointment stakes. On both mornings we stayed there, the only fresh fruit was hard unpalatable melon (3 kinds, equally under-ripe). Apart from that, it was tinned fruit only. Brown bread was excellent though fruit juice was very supermarket/packet and marmalade was similar. The "full Irish" breakfast was fine, if unremarkable. Not good enough in a hotel like Knockranny.

It is hard to reconcile the wide gaps in this hotel which, despite what probably seems like a lot of moaning on this reviewer's part, probably deserves 4 stars.

We received the wonderful gift of a 3 night mid-week stay at Knockranny House Hotel, and fully enjoyed the top-class comfort and service that has won this hotel many international awards, including the AA Best Hotel Award for 2012-2013.

It is a 4 Star Hotel but the accommodation and dining we experienced were as good as any 5-Star we have been in on any continent. It is a family-run hotel, with a unique character, unlike the hotels that belong to a chain. However, there is a large international highly trained and committed staff. With off season offers, Knockranny House is amazing value for money, and should add a special touch to any business conference.

The hotel's top chef has been named the best chef in Connaught, and it is easy to see why. Every meal was a new delightful surprise.

Our room was very large, with twin king-size beds, a large bathroom with bath/shower, antique wardrobe, desk and chair, round table with two comfortable armchairs, and a flat-screen TV. The free Wi-Fi had a good connection. There was a kettle and hostess tray, iron and ironing board and suit press, and safe, but no frig.

In the entrance lobby and in the first-floor bar, a large log fire burned in the fireplace, with comfortable armchairs and plenty of space. There is also a drawing room for quiet reading. Afternoon tea is served in the bar or drawing room, with freshly baked scones and pastries, cream and preserves.

Knockranny comes from the Irish words for Fern Hill, and the hotel is located on a rise above the town of Wesport. There is a spectacular view of Croagh Patrick Mountain from the dining room - if the Reek is not covered in mists. The entrance drive is on the left before reaching the town if approaching from Castlebar just after the 50km speed limit sign.

It is good to note that a table for dinner must be booked in advance. It is wise to do this when checking in the first evening, and after breakfast on the following days. The "smart casual" dress code indicates that denims, shorts, t-shirts and trainers are not acceptable for the dining room.

There is a delightful pool and a fitness suite, available to all resident guests, with towels and flip-flops provided and luxurious changing rooms. There is also an extensive treatment service in the spa, which is rather pricey.

Of his visit to Westport, the Victorian novelist, William Thackeray, wrote: "It forms an event in one's life to have seen that place, so beautiful is it,and so unlike all other beauties that I know of." This busy town, just 50 mins. from Ireland West airport, is a perfect tourist hub for the West of Ireland, providing access southwards to Galway and Connemara, or northwards to north Mayo and Sligo, or east to Knock Shrine and Ballintubber Abbey.

While the town boasts a dozen good hotels, and numerous B&Bs, a stay at Knockranny House has to be regarded as something very special.

Room Tip: This purpose-built hotel in its own grounds is full of character - not a standard high-rise. Its bedrooms are located in different wings, and different levels have different price ranges, so look well at what is on offer.

Had a fabulous weekend here in March. Staff friendly, food was delicious, breakfast devine. Room was huge we had paid to upgrade to delux but when we arrived they upgraded us to a grand delux free of charge. Highly recommend a stay here -- pure luxury

Room Tip: Pay that little extra for that little extra luxury

We stayed here for a weekend in February as a much needed break after the long January blues. The hotel was fabulous. Every aspect met or exceeded our expectations. Our room was really well furnished and finished and the facilities were top class. The pool and spa area added to the relaxation of our stay. We ate in the hotel restaurant on the Saturday and the food was exquisite. Personally the best duck I've ever eaten.

All in all we would thoroughly recommend this hotel. Can't wait to come back.
