We booked both Lagan House and Avalon for our wedding. I had envisioned our guests staying with us at the houses and sharing a communal meal after the ceremony. I am in the States and Michael was both trusting and accommodating in helping me to organize this from such a distance.
As our numbers grew, Michael's expertise came into play and he organized the most beautiful marquee and his brother John created some of the best tasting food we have had!
Many of our guests are very well traveled and have visited some of the most exclusive places around the globe. They were all blown away with their stay at Lagan and Avalon. Michael and his man on the ground Eamon exceeded our every want.
The views are spectacular! The local is perfect to a variety of excursions. The houses are expertly fitted and equipped- We enjoyed 'Alexa's' help in playing music, dimming lights and adjusting the temp. We watched movies on the overhead cinema screen. We cooked delicious meals on the outdoor grills. We enjoyed the open kitchen sunroom format to share meals and hangout, but also relished the time we could spend in the quiet of our room with private t.v. and most rooms with ensuit beautiful marble bathrooms with heated floors and heated towel racks.
The attention to detail in everything is testament to Michael's desire that everyone leaves thinking that was the best vacation they've ever had, and to the great wealth of experience and expertise he has in making this the case.
We will be back. (Our guests are already talking about a one year anniversary visit).
We are forever grateful to Michael, John, and Eamon for making this the fabulous week with family and friends we had envisioned as a celebration of our life together.
Go Raibh Maith Agat Michael
Brilliant location-200 yards from the beach-and top notch facilities. Couldn't praise it more highly. Eamonn was great and we had a fantastic time. We will be back!
Everything that we needed was catered for and there! We booked a weekend away for my parents 40th wedding anniversary and couldn't have found a better place. The spectacular views, the distance to the beach, the rooms, the house itself and the owner were all top class. So much so none of the family from 4-64 wanted to leave! Michael was a pleasure to deal with and we look forward to our return.
We just returned after having spent a wonderful two week Family re-union at Avalon Beach . The Owner Michael is a gentleman and was very gracious and accommodating and Eamon was most helpful and Michael's Brother John brought us his special 'Guinness infused Brown Bread' which was simply divine - all of my Sisters were very impressed . The location is spectacular, just a stroll to Old Head Beach and easy access to Louisburgh which is a lovely little town with a great new Art Store and new Book Store. Westport which is a thriving larger town is just a 15 minute drive . We climbed Croagh Patrick and visited and hiked on Clare Island . The house was ideal for our group of 12 people and I would highly recommend it .
My sister stayed in Avalon last summer, and if the modern fit out with beach facing floor to ceiling window that makes the most of Clew Bay were not enough to make her a true disciple, the unexpected arrival of the owners brother with freshly baked soda bread most certainly was. Being genetically half - Mayo it was enough for me to encourage five other Londonistas to decompress after the Christmas break to Ireland West for a long weekend in early January… and it didn't disappoint...
Up a sweeping drive to an understated bungalow, overlooked by Croagh Patrick and overlooking the bay, we were spoiled for choice with five bedrooms, three en-suite all with TVs . As the area feels old school you will be forgiven for experiencing a shock of the new with its American fridge, endless flat-screen telly, Sky, wine chiller, kitchen island, you get the picture. Avalon welcomes you in, gently embraces you and soon you realise you are in a space that is the essence of great design, a space that creates that rarest of response : one where you are happy simply to be. To sit and gaze, on mountain and bay. Admire cloud and light made frantic by the Atlantic as they play over the solemn Reek, while waves break nearby on Old Head Beach. You will leave it, because you have an itinerary to fullfil; though you would happily stay. And the mood-enhancing view can only be bettered by excursions to either Achill or Connemara National Park where Roundstone awaits - a seafood dispensing haven where baked breaded mussels in O Dowd's served as chasers to cheerfully downed chowder.
Of the two excursions Connemara shades it, the drive from Louisburgh (the route Eamonn the caretaker suggested we avail) enthralls as every bend you take leaves you more breathless than the one you left behind. Brown mountains lord it over pristine lakes, sheep languish on the long acre and Killlary Fjord emerges from the mist without warning, gently insists you stop, and revere
. Evenings afford as much fun in Westport as you wish to have with great music and food and the eternally reliable Ollie the local taxi and tour guide adds to the evening in no small measure.
Mr Durkan, Avalon's owner, I learned was a butcher and hotelier before opening Avalon. I suggest he with his abode deserve to be seen not just as a host offering a home for discerning guests whose design celebrate the best of the local landscape. More than that. In Mr Durkan, a more relaxed yet attentive provider scarcely exists and as such he should be viewed as an ambassador for the region. Avalon is the reason I came to Louisburgh and it will be the reason I return. And it would seem I am not the first with July and August long booked out for 2017 and a booking in the diary for 2018 I am advised.
After our third evening as we readied to depart to Knock airport, we phoned the endlessly patient caretaker Eamonn ,to advise we were about to depart. "Oh" he says, “I will be around in a few hours"
Concerned enquiries about abandoning an unlocked premises were met with charming bemusement. One of our party (all of whom had now morphed from Londonistas to Louisburghers) mused as we departed Knock airport we never did get to sample the home made soda bread. 'No', said Jeremy, we didn't ,”I think we got its flavour though”. And all this, in the depths of sleepy winter? The West is very much awake..
Wow, this house was spectacular with every mod con and comfort you could ever need. With amazing views of Croagh Patrick, Clew Bay and Oldhead beach on your door step it truly is an exceptional place. As a party of 11 the house never felt overcrowded and there were plenty of activities nearby to keep everyone of all ages entertained. I would not hesitate to recommend this stunning house and idyllic location. Thanks Michael for the 5 star hospitality, to your brother for the beautiful home baked bread and to Eamon for the welcome and support during our stay. Will definitely return.
We visited Avalon at the beginning of October.A family celebration: a party of 13. We were overwhelmed by the house it`s space and quality of materials and so well fitted out with every modern appliance......As for the views stunning .both seawards and inland. .Croagh Patrick behind us and Clew Bay Just 100 yards ahead .Our experience with the owner and his manager was always a pleasure as they treated us with the greatest respect and good humour. All details of the rental went through as expected all of which lead to us having a wonderful weekend. We would deariy love to visit again for a longer stay and have recommended it to many friends already.
