My wife, 3 boys, and I, went to Bretra as part of a real treat of a week-end (all 5 of us, youngest being 6, got to the top of Croagh Patrick and then headed to Castlebar to see Shane Ward). I booked the stay directly with the lady of the house and I found her to be extremely helpful and courteous (she offered to keep our bags in the fron room if our rooms were not ready when we arrived, we were arriving very early to tackle "The Reek").

On arriving we got a fabulous welcome from Mrs Gill. She showed us around and wished us well on our walk. Hours later we arrived back where the lady of the house was most interested in hearing of our adventures.

A wonderful selection was available for breakfast (2 of the 5 of us are vegetarian, the others 3 are fussy kids!) and again the lady of the house was friendly and courteous.

We will be back. I would highly recommend this (based on the comments in the visitor book at the house, I would not be alone in this!).

B&B experiences in the west of Ireland are generally a treat. But not in this place.
When we called to book the room we explained that we would be arriving late at night andenquired if there was somewhere neartat we might get a bite to eat, the LL, was ever so nice to my girlfriend and explained that there was a god pub/restaurant 10mins walk away. Not true, it was at least a 45 minute walk, and at night the roads out west, although quiet, can be dangerous towalk on. When we had difficulty finding it she got gruff on the phone to my girlfriend.
The landlady herself provedto be a rather unaccomadating person. As we were climbing a mountain the next morning we asked if she could fill or flask with tea.All she would give us was water! It was shocking, she told us to use the teabags from outr room, which we had already used.
The Double room had an unusally small bed, and the bed itself was clean, the bathroom was very poor and small.
Breakfast was very forgettable, and had obviously been in the microwave.
A B&B can get away with some minor roblems if the Bean a ti herself is a good hostess. This woman certainly was not.Avoid this place like the plague
