“Smashing Food & Prompt Service In An Informal Setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2013

Really impressed with The Helm.

It had been recommended to us by two separate people so we thought we would give it a whirl.

I notice that a lot of other reviews say that The Helm is not in a restaurant setting but that is a plus for me. It is part of a pub setting and the atmosphere is buzzing as a result which is great. The monkfish course was a huge helping which came with a delicious sauce. Similarly the chicken was super too.

I'm not sure if you have to reserve (probably not) but we did and managed to get a table on a busy Saturday night.

Staff were lovely and really on top of their game. Attentive, prompt and very friendly.

“Tasty food but not cheap”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

I have eaten in the Helm twice recently. Both times the food was very good and the staff helpful. I had a young child with me in the evening and he was made to feel very welcome.

One thing I will say is the food is pricey with not much choice for a non meat lover.

“Good food for a bar but it is not a restaurant experience !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013 via mobile

We had to take a very early table as it was booked out and even at 6pm it was full. The menu is quite large and has a good selection. We shared a Brie starter which was nice but overpriced at almost €9 for a wedge of cheese with some leaves. The stir fry beef was average and I was disappointed to find the only vegetables were peppers and way too many onions. It would have been much improved by the addition of some fresh veggies! It comes with salad and rice and I asked for no salad but it came with it anyway. My husband had a steak with trimmings and he thought it was very tasty. We ordered a child portion of pasta for our daughter but it was quite large - easily enough for two children. We shared the apple crumble and the waitress kindly brought us both custard and ice cream when we could not decide. The crumble was a bit tasteless and the apple was not cooked enough. Overall The food is tasty and the portions are large but I could not separate out the fact that this is food in a bar so in summary it is good pub grub but if you want a restaurant experience then don't go to a bar as this does not tick that box! An enjoyable meal none the less.

“Packed with punters - good value meals”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

This place seemed to be busy every lunch and evening time. We ate lunch there one day and represents good value - steak sandwich came with good size portions of chips and salad and potato salad. Very generous portions and tasty food. Recommend if staying locally.

“Be prepared to wait for a table”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2013

Food is lovely but getting a table is a little disorganised and we had to wait for about half an hour, but the food was worth the wait and staff were very friendly
