We went to cafe rua for the first time at night. Really enjoyable experience. Service was great. Very welcoming. Food was very tasty. Fresh and not from an extensive menu which is a bonus. Will definitely go back next time I'm visiting.

Thank freakle

I have been to Rua several times.Staff always friendly ,Food always yummy . There is a set menu with daily specials. The menu is written on a large blackboard which is really hard to read and it is difficult to see from certain tables , that said I am always pleased with my choice.Although not cheap , you will be back for more.

Cafe Rua is a wonderful place to eat. The food is of a very high standard but TOTALLY overpriced. The portions on the main dishes are tiny and not worth the cost. The girls in the restaurant are so friendly but cannot say the same for the owner!!!! The tables are very close and sometimes none has to share a table with someone else who you don't know.

Dear Margery2014,

Thank you so much for choosing to visit Café Rua.

We appreciate that you have taken the time out to review our business and that you found our café a wonderful place to eat.

We are glad that you enjoyed your food but genuinely disappointed that you found the prices to be high. Everything in Café Rua is homemade. In fact, in a recent Irish Times review, noted food critic Catherine Cleary commended us on the price of our food. She wrote: “None of the food in Rua is expensive, you don’t pack out a café in a rural town on a wet Friday by charging through the nose. It costs the same as the food in café where a white van delivers pre-cut chips, drums of stock powder and buckets of mayonnaise.”

We appreciate that not everybody likes to share large tables but there are smaller tables available too. The ‘McKenna Guide’ has written: “… what you need to know about Café Rua is that it’s the friendliest place in the west. And we don’t mean that the staff are friendly - they are, of course - we mean that it’s a place where the other customers are incredibly friendly. Why so? Because this is one busy place so sharing tables is essential…”

We are also delighted that you found our front-of-house team to be so friendly. We spend a lot of time training and we are very proud of our teams - both in the kitchen and front-of-house.

We are a family-run business of three owners. Every guest is important to us. We would be curious to know what negative experience you had with one of us owners which compelled you to write what appears to be your first review on TripAdvisor. If you wish to elaborate, we would be only too delighted to take a phone call from you and discuss your experience. Unfriendliness and overpriced food are not the ingredients that keep a small café open in the west of Ireland for almost two decades.

Yours sincerely,
The McMahon family

I was shocked when I went to pay to discover that VAT was added to my bill and was not included in the price displayed on the menuboard. As far as I could there was no notice displayed to let the customer know that this was the case. Surely under consumer rights they are obliged to display this for their customers.

Dear Liz O O

I have taken time out to reply to you in person but, on the off chance that you haven’t checked your inbox, please allow me to clear up a few matters.

It appears that our itemised bill has caused you some confusion – allow me to set the record straight.

1. VAT was not "added to your bill" as a surprise extra when paying
2. VAT is included on ALL prices listed on ALL our menus
3. Our Café does not require a "notice” on display to inform people of extra costs as there simply are none
4. VAT breakdowns are clearly and concisely itemised on each and every receipt printed from our epos system - as required by law

If you take the time to examine your itemised bill more closely you will see that the information on it - as required by law - is simply a breakdown of how VAT is allocated within the advertised pricing. For instance if you had a chicken salad @ €10.95 (as listed on the menu) your bill will read like so :

1 Warm Chicken Salad €10.95
Ex Vat @9%. €10.05
Vat@9% €0.90
Total. €10.95

We have been in business for almost 20 years - if we were adding extra VAT costs to each customers bill when they came to pay (without listing it on the menu) it is doubtful we would still be in business.

If you require any further assistance in understanding your bill please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
C McMahon
Owner
