We stopped off at the Scholars Townhouse hotel at the end of our holiday and it really topped off a great break away around Ireland. We were warmly welcomed by staff and from the beginning they could not do enough for us. We had dinner in the restaurant that evening and it is no exaggeration to say that it was simply the the best meal that I can recall for a very long time. Staff were friendly an courteous at all times, and I can honestly say that I cannot recommend this hotel and restaurant highly enough.
We noted that the Hotel runs Gourmet Nights on occasion with World Master Chef George Smith, and will definitely be looking to make one of these in the future. Check out their website for details if you're going to be in the area.

My husband and I drove about 40 minutes north of Dublin to stay at this wonderful hotel. It is located in the town of Drogheda, not far from the famous sites of Knowth, Newgrange, Slane Castle and the like. The hotel groud were overflowing with flowers and fountains. The first floor is divided into a wonderful bar (where my husband sampled some of the best local whiskeys) and a formal dining room where luscious breakfasts are served in the mornings and which overflow at night with hotel guests and local residents. The food at this restaurant was superb. Coming from NYC and being goodies, we were pleasantly surprised with the artistry of the dishes, the perfect preparation and the great service. Everyone in the hotel was so incredibly kind and efficient - we were treated like royalty. Our room, 105, was a bit noisy at night from some loud revelers partying on the patio, but hotel staff promptly got other guests to quiet down. Other than that, a perfect stay. The hotel should be given a 4 star rating- great place especially for the value.

We had a 40th dinner with 10 people. The staff generally were extremely friendly and helpful in the afternoon when we checked in, the food and service in the restaurant was great. But the 10 of us ( half of us staying overnight) settling in to the quite small bar after dinner seemed to upset everybody - prickly guests and really quite rude staff. We were I would say a very civilized bunch of late 30 - 40 somethings, having a few drinks, and a laugh. Not quite as sedate as our extremely sedate neighbours it has to be said. But the atmosphere quickly degenerated as the bar staff became increasingly rude over the course of the evening. NIce if you want a quiet dinner with your partner and an early night or you are a retired couple wanting a change of quiet scene. But don't under any circumstances take your party here. They are not fond of laughter or enjoyment. They were happy to take the1,000 or so pounds we dropped on dinner and drinks before 10:30pm but after that they just wanted us out. Nasty!

Just back from a two night stay at Scholars with hubbie. Really enjoyed it. Lovely old-style hotel. Great, not good, service! And food to absolutely die for... a real must.
Room was small but v comfy with a great power shower. Whole hotel beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean.
Only 3 min walk from town centre but street was quiet enough to sleep with windows fully open.
Can highly recommend to anyone planning a visit to Drogheda.

We found the staff very friendly, the breakfast good and the atmosphere great in the evening when the place was buzzing. It was also very reasonably priced for such a nice hotel. The room was fairly spacious and very comfortable but, unfortunately, smelled of smoke. Is smoking allowed in hotel rooms or was this a naughty guest causing the problem? Whatever it was the room could have done with an airing/dose of Febreze to get rid of it but, generally, it was very pleasant.
