This is a former Christian Brothers residence (where the teaching Brothers etc lived - school is adj) and if it was a smart as this they had an easy time!

We arrived a little later than planned but it was no problem; check in easy - although a quick instruction on how the lights worked (you put room keycard in slot) would have been good.

The lone bar man was great - he remembered how to make cocktails just for us! He hadn't been asked for on in a while. He was as helpful as you can find and chatted whilst it was quiet

Room was smallish but well stocked, clean, quiet and the bathroom was good. The shower & free hair/shower gel great.

We'd recommend this for almost anyone and you could easlily do dublin in a day by train from here - many locals do for work!

Drogheda was the place of my first two nights' stay in Ireland. The drive from Dublin airport was a breeze and, having seen how narrow the streets were and how busy the traffic was in Drogheda, I was glad to find the hotel has a good-sized carpark! The welcome at reception, and in the dining room when I requested a rather late lunch, was very warm. My room was a good size, nicely furnished and at the back of the building, so away from any chance of traffic noise (though I suspect there would have been almost none even at the front). The buffet/continental breakfast was more than enough, so I had to (reluctantly) decline the offer of a cooked breakfast - though what I saw delivered to other guests looked great. On my second night in Drogheda, I had walked the town looking for a pub in which to have dinner, only to find that they all were showing an international football game that the Irish team was playing. I was glad to head back to the hotel and dine from the bar menu. A very pleasant meal was had, and the bar staff were able to be chatty but to leave you alone, which was nice.

This is a perfect example why I rely on this site for hotel recommendations. I couldn't find any mention of Scholar's (as the locals call it) in the traditional guidebooks, but booked a room for two nights based on the TripAdvisor reviews, which proved to be very accurate. This is a traditional and more elegant option for those who aren't attracted to the glitz and flash of the d Hotel. The rooms are comfortable and very clean.

The food is excellent, as others have noted, if somewhat expensive. Unfortunately, the bar menu isn't that different from the restaurant, so light snacks are limited. Service was also inconsistent. Overall, however, we were pleased with our stay and were impressed to find such a hotel in a relatively small place like Drogheda.

As soon as we arrived I was impressed straight away. The building itself is beautiful and the surroundings are fantastic and it is close to town centre too which was great. I cant compliment this place enough, the decor inside is fabulous. We went to our room and it was very nice, clean and comfortable. We also booked into the restaurant that night and the food and service was fantastic. This is a hidden gem and although it is quite small it is well worth it.!
I will go back.!
