Drogheda is a town steeped in history and where better to get an overview than at the landmark Milmount museum followed by a walk up to the tower which holds a commanding position overlooking the town and Boyne river. The museum presently under local management is housed in the old buildings were once used to garrison soldiers during the British term of occupation and has not changed much through careful restoration. This museum can only be described as a gem, housing many local artifacts and items that remind the visitor of a bygone age including trades and railway memorabillia. The staff we found were very welcoming and helpful in taking time to explain all aspects of history before taking us to the tower. Known locally as the 'cup and saucer' the Millmount tower was once a military lookout point and location for the artilary big guns which defended the town from invaders. The stunning 360 degree views make the visit well worthwhile together with the military museum with weapons and armour from done the centuries. Millmount is one of Ireland's best museums under local management and is a must see for visitors to Drogheda.
