Review of St. John's Square

St. John's Square
Reviewed January 30, 2016

This place is ok but I cannot see anything interesting. There is a couple of benches under a tree for resting but I would rather do a small walk to people's park than to stay here. Would be good to rest here and get some air if you are visiting someone at the nearby St John's hospital. Other than that I do not recommend this area.

First I must say the photos shown for this attraction are not St John's Square. The building shown is located in Cathedral Place a plaza/ wide street adjacent to St John's Square.
The Square on three sides consists of Georgian townhouses built for the gentry circa 1750 and are located within what was then the walls of medieval Limerick. The major Georgian district in Limerick (built later) is located in a newtown outside the long gone medieval wall, . These houses are faced with local grey limestone unlike most of Georgian Limerick which has red brick buildings. The fourth side of the square has a small church yard and a church built c 1850. This church is a direct replacement for the medieval church of St John which gives the area its name. The square has been revamped lately with paving and information boards etc but there are some old circular information placques on some of the buildings. The general area is a slight bit down at heel and could do with some TLC also two of the houses in the square look unoccupied, which takes from the square. None of the buildings are open to the public but you are quite close to St John's Cathedral which may be open for visiting.
St John's Square is about 10 minutes walk from the main Tourist Office and 5 minutes from the Milk Market.

Great place full of history, St Johns scout hall is on the left of the square house of my alma mater 14th troop also 3rd troop went there in the 60s. The graveyard in the square is the burial ground of a lot of people who died of consumption around the Angela's Ashes era and before. The founding place of Gearaldines soccer club. The buildings survived many attacks even from the black and tans. Glad to see it restored to its present condition. Im sure their is many a story can be told about this area.
