“Fantastic centre, lovely day out for young and old!”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

The centre whose layout is based on two Neolithic houses, has been refurbished to the highest standard! really nice exhibition centre with a huge amount of material that can be accessed through a number of mediums, touch screens allow you to explore Lough Gur's incredible history from 4000bc right up to the early 20th century, children and grown up's alike can "play" archaeologist by trying to piece together a repilca of one of the pots found at lough gur or take apart in an archaeological dig which is set up on site, or play dress up with some costumes that are provided on site.
The replica bronze shield and other replica artifacts are impressive as well as some genuine axe heads!
Outside of the centre visitors can take part in a self guided walking or driving tour of the area whose historical significance extends beyond the lake itself, do some homework before your visit and download the i trails for the walking or driving routes of the area from this very informative website http://www.loughgur.com
There is also some organised guided tours or you can organise a personalised tour, all details are on the website.
The highlight of my visit to the centre was the audio, if you sit on the bench in the middle of the centre, giving you a fantastic view of the lake you can listen to 7 fantastic stories 5 history and two folklore , these would be great for Children who might not have a in interest in the history aspect but can be enjoyed by everyone, the voice in the audios is particularly relaxing and themed with the view of the lake was a fantastic experience.
On a sunny day it is a perfect setting for a picnic or you can avail of a tea/coffee icecream in the visitor centre again with a lovely view of the lake!
Centre which is managed by volunteers from the local company has a very friendly welcome!

“A great family day out suitable for all ages.”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

We went as a family on a lovely, sunny, summers day. The staff greeted us with friendly faces and were eager to show us around. As it was heritage week everything was half price which was even better! Everyone in the family was given the audio tour handsets and entered the indoor exhibition. There were plenty of puzzles for the children to complete and medieval outfits to dress up in. The exhibition was informative, interactive and very enjoyable. After that we decided to go outside and take the walking tour. The audio sets told you all about the landscape and the history of the area. Once you had listened to the history sections you could listen to fairytales and legends all about the lake. The tour brings you back in time and there is also lovely viewing points where you can take gorgeous photos. We also saw loads of beautiful blue dragonflies. Parking was close to the visitor centre. Plenty of picnic areas. You could spend as long as you want there and is suitable for people of any age.
