Owner description: The Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum excitingly captures the story of how Foynes became one of the great aviation hubs of the world between 1937-1945. Walk in the footsteps of JFK, Bob Hope, Eleanor Roosevelt & many other dignitaries, movie stars & refugees who landed at Foynes during World War II. Throughout the original terminal building this truly unique story is told by way of original film in a 1940’s style cinema, showcases covering the war years & numerous exhibits on the romantic flying boat era including the chance to board a life size replica of the Boeing 314 Flying Boat. Foynes & the Flying Boats will be forever connected with the invention of Irish Coffee as they combined to give us this uniquely Irish treat. Learn all about this historic event by watching a wonderful 3D holographic show re-enacting this famous night back in 1943 & after why not taste a delicious Irish Coffee in its original home.

The era of the Flying Boats did not last long, but Foynes was the Shannon Airport of that time. There is a replica of a Yankee Clipper. Just to compare the luxury of air travel then to todays mass transit airlines is worth the visit. Great film footage also. BTW, Irish coffee was invented in the very building housing the museum.

I have been to the Flying Boat Museum a couple of times, the first several years ago, the second this month. It has improved a lot since my first trip. The highlight has to be the full-scale model of an actual flying plane, which you can walk around inside -- this has been added since my first visit, and improves the experience dramatically. There are plans to open another part of the musuem soon -- a control tower -- which will hopefully make it even more of a draw. As it stands, it's a fascinating look back into a little-known piece of Irish and aviation history, with an interesting documentary to kick things off, followed by plenty of intriguing information and some hands-on, interactive pieces. It could be with a bit less emphasis on text, with a few more visual or interactive exhibits, but even so it's a great way to pass an hour, with the plane providing the wow factor that was previously lacking. Don't pass through Foynes without visiting here!

Visited the Flying Boat museum last week and had a great time. Great cinema, totally awesome replica of a flying boat and interactive games for the kids and us! Had nappy changing area also. Had lovely lunch afterwards- homemade soup and brown bread followed by a yummy cottage pie. The only thing was there was some building work going on which is nearly finished.

Our 3yo enjoyed walking through the flying boat. The multimedia video is exceptionally well-done. I wish you could hear static and mock radio calls when walking around the Marconi sets.
