A real hidden treasure nestled in the quaint village of Foynes.

“Foynes is a lovely town- the Flying Museum serves great Irish coffee”
Reviewed September 4, 2011

The Foynes Flying Boat Museum, in Foynes, is a must for any aviator, aircraft enthusiast or historian. It has the best collection of flying boat memorabilial I've ever seen. And it is claimed that "Irish Coffee" was invented right here, when it was served to weary, wet US travelers landing on the Shannon Estuary at the Irish termimus of the Flying Boat line.
But don't just visit the museum. The little village is quaint and worth walking around. After that, take a drive West on the N69 for stunning views of the Shannon with its marine traffic, and pass the Knight of Glin's estate. If your plans permit, take the road all the way to Tarbert and ride the car ferry across the Shannon to Killimer. From there you can head up the entire west side of Ireland. We usually spend the night in Askeaton, where there are great ruins of 10th century castles, abbeys, Knights Templar church, 17th century mills and even one of the few "Hell Fire Clubs" from the 1740s. From there it is a pleasant day's drive to Tarbert, while stopping for several hours at the Foynes Boat Museum for lunch and a few coffees !! From Limerick, take the N69 south and then west along the Shannon River Estuary.

“A delightfully spent two hours!”
Reviewed August 18, 2011

I've been wanting to visit the Foynes Flying Boat Museum for some time and am glad I finally did! Well-presented, interesting, and informative exhibits but the crown jewel is the replica of the Yankee Clipper flying boat which can be explored to one's heart's content. There is an on-site gift shop as well as a coffee shop. My husband and I had a nice lunch which was delicious and filling and the price was more than right. I'd definitely recommend a visit to both the Flying Boat Museum. If you have some extra time to explore after visiting the museum, the little village of Foynes itself is architecturally picturesque and there are some nice views of the Shannon Estuary, as well.
