The Pembroke Hotel was great value for money.
Huge modern room with Queen size bed, Plasma TV , in room ironing board which means not having to phone reception for one, in room security box and very big ensuite restroom.
Very helpful staff and absolutly cracking bar .
The one and only fault was with the breakfast which has a very small selfservice area for the large amount of people that were eating there but the staff were great and were rushed off the feet

Stayed: February 2008

Stayed for one night at the beginning of a driving holiday around the south of Ireland with my husband. Whilst the Reception staff admittedly are somewhat indifferent to the concept of 'service', we were checked in fairly quickly and were very impressed with our room: big, clean, nicely decorated , pristine bathroom, and most importantly good value for money with the current shocking exchange rate on the Euro.
Breakfast (not included in room rate of 79 euro) was well staffed, well presented, fresh and hot, given that they had not long previously catered for a large group.
Overall taking into consideration the level of accomodation, price and excellent central location we wouldn't hesitate to return.
NB: we left an item of sentimental value in the room and one member of staff very kindly posted it back to us after we realised we couldn't get back to get it, many thanks :-)

Having read some reviews here we approached reception with some trepidation, armed with proof of booking etc, prepared for indifference. Imagine our surprise when, after brief courtesies, only moments later we were lounging in our clean, large warm room ready for our holiday to begin! We found all the staff to be traditional Irish-friendly and accommodating, thankfully not pushy/intrusive but ready to help when required. It's modern but not too large to be impersonal. The breakfasts were great, we gorged on brilliant pastries, fresh fruit, cooked stuff etc so no need for anything to eat before evening meal. Facilities in room all good, particularly liked the free papers in reception and free security box, little touches which matter. One tip; unless you like boasting about these things, save your money on the castle view, if you want to see it anytime, just go and look. I reckon it's particularly good value mid week 99 euros for a double room and breakfast. Food in town is really good, thankfully not hyped like Kinsale and Killarney where we thought it was over-priced and patchy. Try the French restaurant next to Rothe House, superb! Victor's good over the road for pub food. Stayed a week, liked Kilkenny's mix of everyday and tourist interest, don't miss going to Cashel, lot's to see there.

we booked this hotel for one night - sunday 25th may - for myself and my husband to have a stress free evening to ourselves. we arrived early and were greeted by John on reception- who we later found out was the manager. John had our room ready when we arrived "early" at 12.15- evening though check- in is not unitl 2p.m. he was very friendly and helpful and gave us an upgraded room to a castle view room overlooking the castle- needless to say this was just perfect and we were in awe when we entered the room!! the beds are huge- the room was huge- decor gorgeous- plasma t.v. - comfy pillows, beautiful crisp white bedding and the bathroom was not only huge but beautifully decorated - not to mention the complimentary toiletries and the unlimited supply of tea/ coffe and hot chocolate in the rooms- it was just bliss!!! we decided next morning at breafast to stay another night and were very well facilitated by John the manager who gave us a great rate for the second night in the same room. i can honestly say - this is the most relaxing time i have had in ages and the unlimited attention to detail and assistance from John made it all the better. he could not do enough for us- when we were leaving - he gave us a lovely gift and we now plan to return to the Pembroke in Sept/ Oct this year- this hotel is like the ones you see on the telly- were everthing is just perfect- only here in the Pembroke Kilkenny it is- and its real genuine perfection!! thanks John and all the satff at the pembroke - we had a lovely stay and cant wait to come back- ps. D.T's bar was quite, but very friendly- they make a lovely latte!!! Lisa & Brian Collins- Dublin

We stayed in this hotel after the Irish May bank holiday weekend. We arrived at 2pm on the Monday. Form the outside the hotel looks fairly decent, but it lacked parking for us to unload our bags from the taxi.

When we arrived there was no one on reception, the lights were dimmed and the bar/coffee shop was locked up. It seemed like the hotel was closed. After about 15 minutes waiting a young member of staff came out from the direction of the lifts. He proceeded to checkout two people who were in front of us. During the process there seemed to be a bit of confusion in relation to the amount on their bill. The younger staff member called a manger, she came out and proceeded to talk down to the two lades. All the while we were left standing there waiting to check in.

Eventually we were noticed and the younger member of staff proceeded to check us in. Even though it was 2pm we were informed that no rooms were available in the hotel. The cleaning service seemed to be a bit “over-whelmed” after the long weekend.

Eventually at about 3pm we got into our room. The rooms are fairly decent large room with air conditioning. TV was fairly small seeing as it’s located a good distance across the room. Over all the rooms were good quality and clean.

Bit of an embarrassing thing happened on our first day when a cleaner entered the room without knocking. This happened while I was getting changed. I’m sure she got an eye full as she embarrassedly closed the door and ran off.. I’m sure it was an innocent mistake, however it always helps to nock.. Remember to lock your door guys!

The coffee / restaurant on the ground floor was never open when we where there. This seemed strange as on our first day we heard the reception saying that it would be open later. The DT’s bar seemed to be open on and off and never seemed to have anyone inside. We ventured down there on the Wednesday to find a member of staff watching a popular soap/day time tv show. Eventually a bar man showed up and proceeded to run around like a headless chicken. Not a very welcoming place as when we were walking out of the bay we felt a bit freaked out by his look.. the line “This is a local shop, for local people” came to mind.

Over all, the hotel was nice, some of the breakfast restaurant staff were good too. However the people on reception and the Female manger were rude and obnoxious. I have to assume this was down to a lack of hospitality or general training they received.

I wont be running back to this hotel.
