Dirty rooms, peeling wallpaper, shower not a shower - just a dripping tap, forced to pay full amount ahead of stay, faulty room cards, grotty overpriced fawlty towers type guesthouse....

....these inconveniences would all have been forgivable if the staff would have been in any way pleasant. My stay in Kilkenny for the Cat Laughs festival was tainted by the RUDEST most obnoxious staff I have ever encountered. The main receptionist, a young girl called Jessica, went out of her way to treat myself and my friends like we were her worst enemies, the last people she would ever want to see. She was rude, impatient, immature and not suited to the service industry - like being a guest in fawlty towers without the laughs and charm of basil. With unemplyment at 10% in this country, surely a better candidate could be found, someone with basic manners.

The fact that you are forced to pay the full amount up front means that this guesthouse is getting away with murder since going elsewhere isnt an option. All in all the worst guesthouse experience I could ever imagine. A real life hell hole.

We almost cancelled our booking when we saw previous reviews.
So glad we did not.
I can't explain all the previous negative opinions but need to address them.
The facade is old and traditional and looks right down the main street. Situated right behind the old town walls and a stone's throw from the river. There has been a renovation project going on which may explain some of the problems in 2008 but don't be put off. We loved it. The people are very friendly and the rooms, while on the small side are clean, cozy and WARM. Security, by card lock on individual rooms, is not a problem. Not sure why a few previous reviewers had trouble adjusting the shower temperature. It was a bit tricky but no different than many high end hotels. Maybe these previous guests don't get out much.
One previous review mentioned problems accessing the parking area from what was described as a very narrow laneway. Please! Roads that wide in Ireland have an 80 km. speed limit. Unless you're driving a stretch limousine, there shouldn't be a problem altough there are a limited number of available spaces so check in early and do some walking to see the town.
We were in town for the Kilkenny music festival so we didn't get much of a chance to take advantage of the pub on the ground floor but it looks warm and inviting and even nay-sayers in other reviews apear to concede it's a great spot.
Breakfast was hearty and we felt like we were being served by family.
Post-renovation the owners have worked hard to keep the traditional trappings while meeting a high standard for the budget-conscious traveller.
It isn't perfect.
I travel regularly and have not yet encountered perfect in any price range.
Do not pass this place by if you want to stay in a genuinely comfortable and friendly old Irish Inn.

Stayed there last saturday night-what a dump!!!
staff rude-no television or mirror in our room-had to wait ages for breakfast and absolutely no choice to be had!!
couldn't take a shower as water was scalding.
There are so many nice places to stay in Kilkenny-avoid this at all cost!!!

Horrible place! Deceptive website, much much worse in reality.. Rooms freezing cold, no heating, dodgy door locks, filthy shower, furniture falling apart, generally rundown and unkept..
Breakfast appalling and expectations were not high at that stage.. kitchen under/not staffed.. flies in the orange juice, no choice, long wait for less than average food..A health hazard!
Overall a really awful experience!
Do not stay here, you will have more comfort camping out in your car!
Disgraceful that people get away with 'running' an establishment like this..

Do not stay here........
You will firstly be asked to pay upfront.
Then you will have a battle to try open the door to you room . Once entering the aparent 'luxuary' bedroom you may catch frost bite from the freezing cold...had a battle to get him to turn the heat on.
Bathroom shower : all four of us decided not to have one rather then dare step into it...without waders!... and didnt fancy drying ourselves with ripped questionable towel!
And we still havnt reached the highlight of the stay...breakfast.
First flys in orange juice. waited 30 mins to get tea. 40 mins later got our burnt fry! During this wait we had common as muck dubliners yelling accross the room at each othere. Didnt care what they said... and nobody to tell them to shut up.
Absolute hell hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This place was not too bad, the breakfast was lovely and was served by a really nice girl who gave us directions for the town. The Bar was busy and full of character. The room was small but clean.

This place looked ok when viewed on the website, but I'd avoid this place in future. Cramped twin room, lack of towels, no TV remote, dodgy coloured water to wash/shave. Foreign staff at breakfast were nice and the food was ok at breakfast, but some drunken punter managed to get access to our room and we found him in a drunken slumber on one of the beds the night we got back from being out. We literally dumped him in the corridor and told the "security" (yeah right) bloke to deal with it. Luckily nothing was robbed, he was just drunk and needed a sleep, but he shoulda never got into the room. My worst accomodation in my visits to Kilkenny........a lesson learnt
