Interesting castle to visit, and this after having had our fill of country houses and castles (Ireland is full of them ;-) ). And the coffee at the cafe is great (a woman we met at dinner the night before said it was one of the highlights of the town...and she was right). Even with the Arts Festival underway, it wasn't too crowded and you could enjoy the place at your own pace.

easy to get too, near kilkenny design centre and restaurants. toilets inside castle are abit of a trek - not great location if you are elderly etc (steps and long corridors to get to them!)

Hadn't been here for thirty years. The self guided tour does not work. You don't get any sense of the history. We just seemed to breeze through and that was that

The castle grounds are amazing. Fabulous walk which leads down to beautiful lake with lots of ducks and water hens. Lovely area to have your picnic and coffee/tea and ice cream can be bought from a wonderful little stall in the grounds in front of castle, saves having to bring a flask. Loads of seating around park and along river walk under castle.
The castle is well worth a visit, has been beautifully restored and there are amazing views onto the Rose Garden from the castle. However we were very disappointed that you could not get a guided tour the day we were there. We were there on a Tuesday during Arts week, early in the morning. I felt there should be a guided tour for first 3 weeks of August anyway as this is peak tourist season. My 15 year old wanted to buy some souvenirs of castle but all he could get were 2 postcards of castle. There were books about the history but we both felt a pop up shop for the summer months with items with Kilkenny Castle logo would entice more families inside. Other than that it is a must to visit while in Kilkenny.

A major renovation has taken place on the castle and is a wonderful sight. I recommend getting there just as they open to avoid the large tour busses. This will allow for the best "people less" photos. There is also a short but very insightful video in the media room that I would recommend. make sure not to miss the impressive gardens at the castle.
