Kilkenny is a lovely little town with a beautiful castle and river walk The castle has beautiful grounds and a number of the rooms have been restored to original splendor. Definitely worth a visit.

The "tour" that you pay for is actually self-guided - you get a little pamphlet and there is information posted along the way, with people in several of the rooms to answer questions. It's nice to linger a bit where you like and skip the stuff you're less interested in, and the folks in the rooms were friendly and knowledgeable.

The rooms are beautifully restored, and in addition to the information posted about the castle itself, in many places there are photos of the restoration process, which was interesting to us.

I was particularly taken with the large hall full of paintings - they had dozens of portraits of castle owners and patrons and their family members, many of them quite beautiful, all with little blurbs posted.

Beautifully manicured rose garden as well - it smells amazing and it's a nice spot to sit and rest.

Looks amazing from the exterior. A true castle in all of it's grandeur, but the inside is limited and not very interesting since it appears only part of the castle is open and restored to a more recent period. Docents were very helpful and knowledgeable so ask questions.

Beautiful grounds to relax or run with the wind. The castle was well maintained and the rooms in the castle were decorated with beautiful furniture and items. The garden with the fountain was so photogenic and the large park like lawn on the opposite side was impressive with it's size. Easy to park and enjoy the castle as well as walking down the street to the main part of Kilkenny. A really fun day.

This was the only castle we visited and it was amazing. You definitely need to watch the video beforehand to learn the history of the castle. It was a self guided tour but there were folks around to answer your questions. It would have been nice to see more but what they have is pretty cool. And being Butler's, it was more special (although sadly I don't believe we are related to those Butler's!).

The gardens were lovely and relaxing too.
