“Lovely but out of season you can't wander by yourself”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2013

What this means is that you are tied to the guide and what he has time to show you and tell you. The guide was good but I was desperate to look at other things and spend. Quality time looking around. Grounds are super and on a nice day probably brilliant.
The cafe across the road was excellent with good service and good food though not cheap.

“Unpleasant”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 28, 2013

The castle itself is impressive, but the actual experience of visiting is downright unpleasant. When my friend and I tried to purchase tickets, we were told we'd have to wait about an hour and join one of the guided tours of 45 people. When we seemed hesitant, the worker tried to give us the hard sell, so we hopped in the car and drove to the Rock of Cashel instead. If you're in Kilkenny, take a look around the exterior, but then go spend your time doing something else. Unless you seriously love castles, going inside Kilkenny Castle probably just isn't worth the hassle.

“Establish times!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2013

A group of us traveled to Ireland from the US and the Kilkenny Castle was a must-see on my list. We looked up the Castle hours on line and in our guide books. It clearly stated that it opened at 9:30am during the off season (January). We were staying at the Ritz Carlton in County Wicklow, about 90 minutes away from Kilkenny. We got up early to get to the castle as close to 9:30am as possible.
We arrived at 9:35am & found the front doors locked. A woman came out & told us to go watch a 12 minute video at the far end of the castle & by the time we were done, she would be open & ready for us. We did so. Upon returning 12 minutes later, the odors were open and the establishment appeared to be open.
We tried to purchase tickets for the 45 minute guided tour (the only tour offered, no self guided). We were told (by the same woman) that the first tour wouldn't start until at least 10:30am, IF enough people had "gathered". We did not have time to spend the whole day in
Kilkenny (we were on our way to Cork). So, we ended up just taking some outdoor pictures & leaving.
I just don't understand why the staff didn't just tell us at 9:35 that even tough they open at 9:30, they really not open until 10:30 (if you don't tour, you can't be in the castle, there's nothing to do except take the tour. There isn't reason to be open if there's no tour).
We were only in Ireland for a week and planned out our travel time each day. When it was all said & done, the four of us wasted about five hours of traveling & gas to go see this castle. The least the staff could o would be to be open on time & start the tours when there are tourists paying to tour. If the first tour is at 10:30am, then their opening time should be 10:15.

“The best playground we have visited in a long time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2013

On our short trip to Kilkenny we didn't have time to do the castle tour but we visited the playground with our two young children who didn't want to leave! The equipment is really new and suitable for a broad age range and the play surface is very safe. Highly recommend a visit!
