We are a family of 6 -- three teenagers and a 10 year-old -- and we absolutely loved our stay at Park Place apartments, and we'll definitely stay here again on future visits to Killarney.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by name by Anne, who promptly showed my husband how to get into the underground parking lot (great security!).
We had a 2BR 2 bath apartment on the first floor up (second floor American) overlooking the side street, which was much quieter than being on the main street. There are other apartments overlooking a courtyard, and they appeared to be pretty quiet as well. From our living room and both bedrooms, we had a view over rooftops, and we could also see a couple church spires. I imagine that apartments on the two higher floors would have even nicer views. Our apartment had a "balcony," but this really just means that in the living room, you can open up the French doors rather than just a window. It's not a balcony that you can actually step out onto.
The apartment was very spacious for all six of us and very beautifully decorated. There were two twin beds in the en-suite bedroom, and there was a (small) double bed (not a queen) in the second bedroom. The staff had kindly set up a single fold-out bed in each bedroom to accommodate all 6 of us. However, we ended up moving the fold-out beds to the living room because there was more room there. The living room had a door that could close, so the kids sleeping in there had their privacy.
I have to say that while the regular beds were very comfortable, the fold-out beds were not. I would only recommend them for children. The mattresses are only about 3 inches thick, and the bed frame is made of slats, which you can feel through the mattress. After a night or two, we just put the fold-out matresses on the living room floor instead of sleeping on the bed frame.
The floors throughout the apartment are beautiful marble (travertine) and the travertine continues through to the bathrooms. The showers have great water pressure and lots of hot water. The kitchen had everything we needed for simple meals and snacks, though there were only plates and utensils for four. There was a microwave, a coffee press (not a coffee maker - this also seems to be standard throughout Ireland), refrigerator, oven and stovetop.
Probably the biggest problem we had was with the washer/dryer machine. While there was an instruction folder for all the kitchen appliances, the instructions for the washer/dryer were not complete, and we had such a hard time figuring it out. We didn't know which drawer to put the detergent into, how to start the machine, how to stop it, and most important, how to get the clothes to dry. The wash cycle was about 2 hours long, and sometimes if we pushed the right buttons, we got the clothes to dry, but that took another two or more hours. So one load of clothes takes at least 4 hours to wash and dry, and since it's all in one machine, you can only wash one load at a time. When we were lucky enough to get the clothes to dry, they ended up VERY wrinkled, and one top of mine got some minor damage, so avoid washing anything slightly delicate. Most of the time, we ended up hanging the clothes up to air dry, but that took time, too.
(For what it's worth, we've used these similar small washer/dryer combination machines in Europe before with the same results. Maybe if we had more experience with them we'd know better how to avoid the wrinkles. I can't help but imagine poor Irish housewives spending all their time ironing every single item of clothing, including clothing that normally doesn't wrinkle.)
The location of these apartments is perfect. It's at the top of the High Street, so you can easily walk to shops and restaurants and even to one of the entrances to Killarney National Park. We could let the older kids go wander the town on their own and know that they could easily return to the apartment whenever they wanted.
Downstairs and around the corner is a little market where you can buy the food and supplies you need. We had to buy our own dish soap (this seems to be normal in Irish rentals - I still don't understand why they don't provide dish soap). We also bought our own laundry detergent and bath soap here (the master bathroom had a small bar of soap, but the other bathroom did not).
It was also a plus to be able to stay as many or as few nights as we liked. We've stayed in four other self-catering houses/apartments in Ireland, including one in Killarney on another visit, and It seems that most Irish rentals want you to stay for a full week, from Saturday to Saturday. For us, that doesn't fit into our travel style, so at Park Place, we loved being able to stay for only four nights and to arrive and leave on days that fit into our itinerary. At about 127 Euros a night, this was by far the least expensive stay of our 18-night trip through Ireland. For six people, this is a wonderful bargain!
Additionally, the staff was extremely helpful. I had an accident and required medical attention, and Michelle immediately got me an appointment with a nearby doctor and gave us clear directions how to get there. The doctor visit, which included an injection, was only 50 euro ($75) and the two prescriptions were a total of 11 euro ($16), far less than my insurance copay at home, and there was no endless paperwork and no wait time at all for the doctor or the prescriptions.
We had some noisy neighbors on the Friday and Saturday nights of our stay with "hen parties" (bachelorette parties) coming in at 3:00 both mornings of the weekend. They were very loud, but Michelle gave us her cell phone number and told us to call her if it happened again - even if we called her at 3:00am. (We decided not to bother her as it only happened on the two weekend nights.)
Again, we will definitely stay here again on future visits. The staff, location, size of accommodation, and price can't be beat!
