We hiked up into the Gap on Christmas Day, and found the scenery to be stunning! It is possible to drive through one a one lane road, but we really wanted to get out of the car and get some exercise, so we walked up and then back. We passed several lakes, fantastic views, and many friendly sheep. Beautiful!

Traveled with some college friends to Ireland for St. Patrick's day in 2007 (not 2012, like I was forced to claim). We were told that we needed to drive the road to the Gap if we were in the Killarney National Park. It was good advice.

We had a rental car, but no GPS. I would suggest GPS for future travelers. We drove in from the southern end of the Ring of Kerry and there were a couple of unmarked dirt roads and such that made things a little confusing but we made it.

The scenery was amazing and there were several times along the road that we all wanted to get out of the car and take pictures/climb the hills. This can be a difficult feat at times b/c the road is narrow and there are few places to pull to the side.

You may notice that when you're close, there are some buildings/horse drawn carriages and signs telling you to pull over for the Gap of Dunloe. These are paid tours so if you want to see it for free, just keep driving.

It was windy when I went in March, but that may not be the case year 'round. I would still bring a wind-breaker and/or a rain coat. There are a few small waterfalls along the route that make for good picnic spots if you plan to go during lunch.

Over all, it was a great drive. Great photos (if your camera isn't terrible like mine).

We did a tour (not recalling the tour company's name right now), but it started with a jaunty cart ride through the gap with a very entertaining fellow. We then stopped for lunch at Lord Brandon's Cottage before taking a boat back through the three lakes to our starting point. Very interesting tour - learned a lot about the history, and it was amazing to see that people still live in the gap. Definitely a must-do when you're in Killarney!

Going to Ireland and don't go to this place is the same that don't go.
For me, this is another spectacular, beautiful and inspiring place to visit.
Fully unmissable!!!
