A really atmospheric drive, through ruggedly beautiful countryside, having as a destination, Kenmare, which is a handsome, and well serviced town, which is well worth visiting.

This is definitely a walk you will want to go on on your visit to Kerry. Just follow signs to Torc mountain and start walking up the path. Instead of going up tor, keep going straight and follow the path to Kenmare. Beautiful rolling hills, nice ruined stone houses. Lovely waterfall on the way there with a pool which is deep enough to swim in (if your brave enough!). Great walk for a sunday afternoon.

I have travelled these beautiful roads all my life, fishing as a boy with my father or sightseeing with my wife and children, always greatly impressed but now, at almost 70 I donned a pair of hiking boots to discover the breathtaking beauty of the interior. I have passed by these places hundreds of times, stopping to fish in river or lake or to merely picnic with my family . If you think that the views from the road are beautiful just wait till you see it from the trails .Try it yourself you do not have to have hiking boots as sneakers will suffice on many of the trails, just bring waterproofs and a warm layer as the weather in the mountains can change rather quickly. If the trail ends and you don't have boots then turn back as one can encounter ,muck, bog and deep streams constantly.
If you have to turn back, sometimes it can look completely different in the opposite direction.
Next time you are in the mountains, park the car, take the wife's/girlfriend/childrens hand and walk a trail for half an hour ,I have no doubt the you will be impressed and best of all there is no charge ITS FREE

A word of caution,do not attempt to go higher in the mountains without someone who is aquainted with them, stick to the trails and safety.

The road through Kenmare from Bantry to Killarney had absolutely wonderful views. The mountains with sheep dotted throughout (and right along the side of the rode although we didn't have any to wait for on the road) were the landscape that we had hoped to experience in Ireland - and it did not disappoint us. We pulled off the road and hiked to the top of a rocky outcrop for a fantastic view!
