Review of Muckross Abbey

Muckross Abbey

My favourite place in Killarney. A short walk from the car park and there it is nestled among the trees. Beautiful abbey, ruined of course, ( I blame Cromwell. I know reviews are not supposed to be personal but in this case the mad Puritan can take the flak) but in good enough condition to explore several floors. Very photogenic and in a reflective moment it is easy to see the monks going about their business. Would be a great place for kids and hide and seek although in this case my wife declined! A wonderful tree grows in the cloister and dominates the central abbey...quite unique. Not many people around and it's free. Some places exceed expectations and this is one.

this was our favorite part of the day, had only planned to walk by but spent over 2 hours walking through the old abbey. if old church ruins are not your thing you may just want to walk by, if they are, then this is the place. enjoyed walking around upper floors and trying imagine the structure as it once looked

If you're just visiting Killarney National Park or doing the whole Ring of Kerry, then this is worth a stop. I didn't have any reference guide and that's a shame as I would have wanted to know a lot more about the Abbey, especially as it's so evocative at dusk (I think the slight drizzle and wind added to the atmosphere). Plenty of great pics to be taken. You can almost feel the presence of the monks from centuries ago!

Entrance into the ground is free. You have to pay to go into Muckross Abbey. There is beautiful scenic walks all around the grounds of the Abbey and you can walk up to Torc waterfall from the Abby on go on one of the many jaunting carts ( horse and carts ) I would definitely recommend a visit. There is a lovely restaurants with great desserts on site.

You can really explore this place. There are three stairways you can use and lots of grounds to explore.
