Owner description: The Church was built in 1870s on the site of former churches. It is thought to be the ancient site of the early churches from which the town gets its name "Church of the Sloes" in Irish is Cill Airne (Killarney). This church is noted for its matching set of vibrant stained glass windows, its organ (the church's acoustic is fabulous) and its decoration. It is situated between the Hotel sector and the main shopping area. Many visitors pop in to see the beautiful interior, to pray and light a candle, or for our free concerts which take place in the summer season. The concert programme features visiting choirs and orchestras from around the world. These concerts are free; we invite donations after the concert for our Restoration Appeal. Occasionally there is a ticketed concert (available on the door) to raise money for other causes. All concerts are advertised on the notice board (and our Facebook page) and all start at 8pm. We are especially proud to host each year the Spraoi Chiarrai concerts that feature local young Irish musicians who are being given their first taste of public performance. They play traditional Irish music on traditional instruments. The local Schools of music and dance also have concerts; it can be quite never wracking for these young people as it is their first time in public. This is the Church of Ireland building (not to be confused with the Roman Catholic Cathedral also called St Mary's on the other side of town).

“Most disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2012

We expected high class music as this concert was in a Church. Unfortunately, we were gravely disappointed. Although the setting was beautiful, the singers were weak and their voices hardly filled the room. When speaking to the audience, they could hardly be heard. Each girl appeared embarassed and uncomfortable in her surroundings. The dancer's feet could not be seen as she did not stand in the middle of the aisles. It would have been good for her to have explained what the dance was called and more about it for she did state that this was a special Irish dance that she had had specific training in. The artists were very badly dressed and looked completely unprofessional. I wish I'd stayed in the pub where the music was free rather than pay for a night out in St. Mary's Church, Killarney.

I'm sorry no-one responded to your review earlier. We regret that your experience of the concert didn't meet with your expectations. Not having been here at the time I can only deduce that the concert was one of our programme for young new performers. This would be their first outing in the public domain. We offer them, in partnership with their Schools of Music and Dance, the chance to experience public performance. For some this is too daunting. (It happened also the first of those concerts I attended, when I was newly arrived.) We will consider in future alerting our visitors to the nature of these particular performances.

Very interesting little church, with the most beautiful stained glass windows. It sits in the town center

Thank you for your review; sorry your comments have not been addressed until now. Yes, some people have mistaken our Church for the Cathedral: they're both called St Mary's. Ours is the Church of Ireland (which is Anglican); the Cathedral is Roman Catholic. We've asked to have the "wrong pics" shifted to their rightful page.
