Hands down the best B&B we stayed on our trip! We had a little trouble finding it, but we plugged Muckross House into the GPS then watched for the Friars Glen sign on the main road. From the minute we arrived Mary made us feel like a house guest, with a map and a flashlight to find dinner. She made us a fire to read by and checked in later to make sure we needed anything. The towels were big, and the bathroom was nice, with a bathtub and room to move. We loved seeing the two dogs in the morning and the view of the park from the window was breathtaking. We wanted to stay an extra night, but couldn't due to our next B&B having our cc number.

Breakfast in the morning was impressive, we were greeted by several types of juice, brown bread, corn muffins, yogurt, fruit, cereal and then were able to order from the menu. The banana fritters were so good and my husband loved his irish breakfast.

If you are up for hiking the location can't be beat, and the service is 5 star. I can't wait to go back to Ireland and stay at Friars Glen again!

My Mom and I stayed at Friars Glen for one night and were warmly welcomed by Mary and John. They went out of their way to make us feel at home and no request was too much trouble. From the peat fire in the evening, to the delicious homemade breakfast and spotless accomodations, we were so happy with our choice.

Friars Glen is perfectly situated for hiking/exploring Killarney National Park, viewing Muckross House and grounds, taking in the vista at Ladies' View and driving the Ring of Kerry - keep your eyes peeled for the tye-dyed sheep!

It was the nicest B&B we stayed in while in Ireland by far, and I would even say it's the nicest B&B I have ever stayed in (and I've stayed in quite a few on three continents!).

I am looking forward to returning to Friars Glen with my husband for a longer stay next time I'm in Ireland!

Thanks to Mary and John for making our stay in Killarney so wonderful.

Room Tip: Two bed ensuite facing the National Park

Friars Glen is the best B&B we've encountered - in Ireland or anywhere else. Situated in its own grounds up a long, daffodil-lined driveway, the large house has stunning views over the mountains of the Kilkenny National Park and is only five minutes drive from Muckross House, the centre of the estate that forms the nucleus of the Park. The welcome from Bridget, who smothers guests with hospitality on arrival, and from proprietor Mary O'Leary can't be faulted and usually includes a complimentary pot of tea in the lounge in front of a roaring peat fire in the winter months. Our room was huge - virtually a suite - with every facility including free wifi. Breakfasts in the conservatory-style breakfast room overlooking the mountains are beautifully presented (for a change from the usual Irish breakfast, try the banana fritter with honey and bacon). Friars Glen won't suit if you want to be in the centre of Killarney (it's five kilometres south on the Kenmare road), but its perfect if you want peace and quiet and have your own transport for evening meals.

Room Tip: Excellent for walking in the national park.

Our room was a very spacious en suite with a glorious view of Friar's Glen.

This is the perfect location if you enjoy the mountains, nature, and hiking. When we first arrived, Mary gave us a very detailed map of some hiking trails nearby that she had put together along with some literature from the park and a flashlight and we were off. With her help I think we covered some of the most picturesque ground in the park.

Returning that night they had a fire going and we enjoyed their own photography around a cozy sitting room.

Breakfast was amazing. Healthy options as well as sweets and all the traditional Irish breakfast items. The place settings were a treat and flowers from the garden were set on the table. You really couldn't ask for better experience.

We were only going to stay one night in Killarney, but when we found this location online we decided to stay longer and travel to as many areas as we could by car. This location was a great base to see the ring of Kerry as well as the Dingle Peninsula. I strongly recommend that if you are going to these areas to stay here as many days as you can, it is a warm welcome home after a day of hiking.

This past July I took my Mom to Ireland and we enjoyed a lovely vacation traveling by car from Dublin to Galway. We spent one lovely night at Friars Glenn and our parting comment to John was that we should have stayed at least two. Everything you read is true and then some - a beautiful, warm home in a gorgeous setting - a family dog always happy for a comforting rub - fantastic breakfasts and outstanding hospitality. Highly recommended. Stay at least two nights! You won't want to leave.

My husband and I stayed at 7 lovely B&Bs on a driving tour of Ireland. I chose each one carefully, using Trip Advisor reviews, and was not disappointed by any of them. That said, Friars Glen was our absolute favorite. The other reviewers are not exaggerating - it is a very beautiful guest house with wonderful hosts and delicious breakfasts. The location was exactly what we wanted - very close to all the sights of Killarney without having to stay in the city. One more thing - upon arrival, we were having trouble with a slowly leaking tire, and John found a pump and helped my husband refill it several times. When it became obvious that the tire needed to be fixed, he sent us to a nearby garage where they fixed the tire in less than 10 minutes for a very nominal charge. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to stay in a large hotel in Killarney when this perfect place is right up the road.

Friars Glen is a wonderful place for a family (or couple) to stay in Killarney. We enjoyed everything about it - its location (outside of the Killarney Town but great access to everything around Killarney), immediate surroundings (beautiful and very quite), large , comfortable and beautiful bedrooms, seating area with a fireplce to read (important if it rains), full Irish breakfast (if you like to eat, this is a real treat), and most of all, the inn-keepers friendliness and pure joy in letting us know what our options are for seeing and experiencing Killarney and making arrangements when needed. This was the best place we stayed on our European Summer Vacation.
