“Second best to Downton Abbey”

If you like the tv series. Downton Abbey, Muckross house is a must! The guide was interesting, easy to understand. We saw a lot, not just a few rooms. Very friendly staff at the shop where we purchased several souvenirs.

“Gracious Victorian Living”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

We were pleasantly impressed with Muckross House and Gardens. The story told by the guide about the owners of the house was fascinating. The invitation by owners to Queen Victoria and King Albert was precipitated by their financial difficulties. The Queen and King traveled on the lovely Lake the house over looks by boat. They hunted with the locals. They greeted the towns people that anxiously lined the lanes to catch glimpse of their queen. The guide explained the habits and customs of a gentle and gracious age. The antiques in the home are original or similar to the originals that populated the house in the day. The gardens and outdoor scenery is stunning. The carriage ride to the waterfalls and around the lake is a must. The mountain views are magnificent. Don't miss the children's village and animals.

“Lovely grounds”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

It was very busy the day we went to Muckross but we still found a car park quite easily. The grounds are stunning, with the house itself acting as the centrepiece. We didn't do the tour of the house, preferring to stay outside and make the most of the sun, but I'm sure it would be interesting. We took a very enjoyable horse drawn carriage ride all the way up to Torc Waterfall, seeing beautiful scenery along the lakes. Set right in the Killarney National Park, definitely stop in for a look around if you are in the area.

“Stunning scenery and beautiful old House”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

My wife and I visited the Muckross House which is located on the small Muckross Peninsula between Muckross Lake and Lough Leane, two of the lakes of Killarney, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the town of Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland. The House is a mansion designed by the Scottish architect, William Burn, built in 1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife, the watercolourist Mary Balfour Herbert. With sixty-five rooms, it was built in the Tudor style. Extensive improvements were undertaken in the 1850s in preparation for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1861. It is said that these improvements for the Queen's visit were a contributory factor in the financial difficulties suffered by the Herbert family which resulted in the sale of the estate. According to legend, the house was to be visited by Queen VIctoria and the family invested heavily in upgrading the home in anticipation of her visit. She did visit along with some 100 of her staff and loved it. The family anticipated being granted a title and other benefits from her visit. However, a short time after her visit, her husband Prince Albert died and she overlooked the granting of title, etc. and because of the cost of ugrading the house, the family went bankrupt. In 1899 it was bought by Arthur Guinness, 1st Baron Ardilaun who wanted to preserve the dramatic landscape. Later,It was bought by a wealthy Californian mining magnate William Bowers Bourn, as a wedding gift for his daughter Maud and her husband Arthur Rose Vincent. Touring the house is like a travel back in time with the original furniture in many rooms, original dolls clothed in period clothes, etc. The nearby lake and gardens are an adventure in itself and a trip well worthwhile for the traveler interested in the history of Ireland and great houses of the time.

“Beautiful peaceful gardens”

We came here for a few hours after driving across from Wexford. Sat by the lake reading on the sunshine as the water lapped in. Perfect day and stunning scenery.
