This is a must if you are in the area. We were there on a very rainy day so missed the beautiful gardens at leisure, but seeing again the interior and the prideful ongoing restoration was delightful with our most hospitable docent.

Muckross House and Gardens was owned by an incredibly rich family that went bankrupt hosting Queen Victoria and her entourage shortly after the Irish Potato Famine. Most of the tour celebrates this visit and the opportunity to contrast it with the fact that the government did nothing to prevent nearly one million of its subjects from starving to death was totally lost. The "jaunting carriage ride" to get to the house is nice and entertaining and the gardens are great.

We opted to not go through the tour, as the kids were less than thrilled to tour another "old house", but we did walk around the outside, go into the visitors center and then go on to the waterfall.

We loved learning about early farming days and the people who worked here were so charming and genuine. They shared personal stories and answered all of our questions. It was a bit of history, education and farm all in one. A perfect lovely day!

Expensive cafeteria food. Nothing to write home about.
