“disappointing”
Reviewed September 2, 2009

we have stopped here before on previous visits so were looking forward to lunch in the sun. unfortunately, although it was august - high season - there was only 1 person serving at the bar and 2 others running around the restaurant and outside tables. i made 2 trips to the bar asking for service before a very harassed waitress ran out serving people randomly and not in the order they arrived. we waited half and hour to get service and the soup and sandwich 'deal' that eventually arrived was mediocre, to say the least. ham salad sandwich was ham with chopped up bits of pepper, cucumber and tomato mixed in a ?mayonnaise. cheap and not cheerful!
trying to settle the bill was another ordeal with people waving money and credit cards at the counter and the same barman trying to deal with everyone.
as a recognised tourist spot, the management would do well to improve their staff numbers and quality of lunchtime food to live up to its reputation as 'the place to stop'

“Big meals for the big appetite!”
Reviewed September 2, 2009

Kates is at the very opening of the Gapof Dunloe, the starting point of many an exhausting walk! The food is delicious and the service impecable. My husband and I dined at kates on 2 ocassions. Once for dinner and once for lunch, and if ,like me, you are a liitle put off by crowded seating areas, my advice would be to avoid the lunchtime meal and opt for the evening when the rear dining room is opened. The service was a lot more relaxed for the evening meal which made it ok for slow eaters ( like me) to enjoy their meal. I had the lamb shank with veg and it was divine. Hubby had steak which he really enjoyed, but don't get carried away and order dessert until you've eaten your main....the meals are large and very filling!!! Good value all round. Attentive staff, good food and marvellous scenery....just don't ask about Kate!!!!!

“What a let down - dirty & smelt of mens urinals”
Reviewed July 14, 2009

So looking forward to lunch at Kate Kearneys cottage on a stop at the Gap of Dunloe after reading it's trip advisor reviews and looking at it's website however, when we walked in at lunchtime the place looked dark, uninviting, the tables looked like they needed bleach cleaning, the floor sticky, the bar seating area smelt like mens urinals. There were a few of the 'jaunting ride' guys at the bar who looked us up and down and made us feel unwelcome - their eyes following us round all the time. There was no one behind the bar so we wondered into the restuarant which looked more up to date and cleaner!~ yet this was closed - on a lunchtime? ok it had been raining yet all the more reason to make a place clean, feel welcoming so people stay longer??? - very dissapointing - we didn't stay.

“best waitress in Ireland”
Reviewed May 8, 2009

We stopped at Kate Kearneys Cottage for our sunday lunch before we moved on for Dingle and our waitress eileen was amazing, she was able to tell us about some things worth wile stopping for on our way to Dingle and then onwards to Galway, it was very unusual to have an Irish waitress take care of us as most restaurants heve polish staff with very poor english and they could not even explain the menu not to mention the local ares, the price was fantastic only 20.00euros for a 3 course sunday lunch including steak, who ever owns this place keep up the good work and hold on to that fantastic waitress.

“A most memorable evening.”
Reviewed May 4, 2009

We visited Kate Kearney's on the recommendation of our host at Loch Lien Manor House. We enjoyed some wonderful authentic Irish music. We were also lucky enough to have some young girls in the restaurant who were willing to share their Irish dancing skills with everyone. The poached salmon with white wine sauce was the best salmon I've ever had. The sauce was delicate and delightful. We only wish we had been able to stay another night so we could repeat the experience!
