“Christmas time in Athenry and Galway”
Reviewed January 1, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Just enjoyed a week in Banba house which is well located for access into Galway town or for walks around the historic village of Athenry. This large house (which sleeps up to 12) has many spacious rooms and was more than adequate for the six of us.The TV system was rather dated but was very large and in reality little used as we hadn't really gone way to watch TV anyway. Nearby were several pubs offering a variety of facilities including food, sport TV, live music, craft ales and craic. The house dog, Jessy was very friendly and I enjoyed taking it for a few walks during my stay and so encouraged me to explore more of the village than i might otherwise have done due to the mild but inclement weather. Not sure if you can bring your own pets to house. The kitchen was well fitted and provided everything we needed to cook an excellent Christmas dinner. Wish I was there now.

“Charming and spacious home near everything.”

My only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer. Ray was a gracious and attentive host. The home was everything we hoped it would be and was within walking distance of downtown. An added bonus was getting Ray to share some of his stories; they were well worth the time shared. The turn of the century home featured larger rooms, high ceilings and a very open feel. It was the fourth home on our tour and was very livable for our group of ten. We would love to stay there again.

From start to finish we ( a group of 16) had an amazing weekend! Ray was a wonderful host very help and on site very quickly when we needed a few tea bags after our long journey. The house is amazing with unique interior, and accommodated 16 ladies very easily. The house is beautiful & comfortable with all the fitting and fixtures you would need for a group of any size. Ray helped us arrange music in the local pub which went down great with the group. Ray couldn't have done more for us! we had the best weekend ever!

“The best holiday we ever had......”

We spent a week in Banba House and I honestly have to say it was the best holiday we ever had! The owner Ray was unbelievably accommodating and even offered to baby sit out kids so myself and my husband could go out one of the evenings! The house is magnificent and full of period features and the food that Ray laid out for us upon arrival was truly exceptional and incredibly thoughtful :-) We have a wonderful week and by the end of it we were all sad to go, especially the kids and they loved the house and had incredible fun with Ray himself. We have already booked to come back to Banba house later in the summer and we are really really looking forward to another great holiday in the lovely quaint village of Athenry!

“Everything is Perfect”

We stayed at Banba House for 5 nights in early Sept. 2013. The house and host, Ray McGrogan, were wonderful. There were only 2 of us, middle aged women from the U.S.. Ray met us at the train station and took our bags the one block to the house and up the stairs to the bedrooms.
We were both immediately enchanted by the house and hospitality. We had arranged to have the welcome dinner on our arrival, and it was set up beautifully just as in the online pictures, and the next morning we had our breakfast delivered to the kitchen by Ray as well. It was all delicious and beautifully presented with a pot of mums on the table as well, And we actually had so many leftovers that we got several meals out of the food Ray prepared.
Banba House is so grand, and welcoming. Lots of huge windows, and comfy seating, The beds were very cozy as well. We had no problems with the hot water, very simple to heat up the shower. Everything was clean as a whistle. There is a booklet on the entry table with all of the information needed about the house, local medical facilities, restaurants, pubs, trains, buses, hair salons, laundry, anything you could need. And if there is anything you need beyond that Ray is right next door and would be at the front door in a matter of minutes to help out when called.
It is about a 10 minute walk into the lovely town of Athenry. Very small and quaint. Not touristy, not so good for shopping, but wonderful for pubs, and meals out. We visited a different couple of pubs everyday and met so many interesting people. They were all friendly and helpful, from the shop owners to the bartenders. One night we listened to the lovely trad music at one of the pubs and enjoyed it immensely, especially the fact that young and old all enjoy it together. Only a few minutes ride on the train to Galway where there is lots of shopping and street performers and fun.Round trip for 11 Euros on the train, the bus takes much longer and was 5 euros one way.
My advice is to consider this wonderful way to vacation, visiting a small town and having time to meet, and get to know the Irish people and culture. Athenry is lovely, has a 1000 year old castle to tour, and don't skip over the Athenry Heritage Center tour, it was very interesting, full of history and amazing artifacts. Can even try on the medieval military wear. And the ancient cemetary and parish are amazing to wander through and great picture opps as well.
So thanks to Ray for a wonderful time at Banba House. And thanks also to the people of Athenry for making us feel so welcome.

What can I say Linda, you ladies where so gracious during your visit and its such a pleasure for me to have you as guests at Banba. Firstly thank you so much for making a very special piece of art as a present to me while you stayed in Banba. It now takes pride of place in my kitchen and everyone who comes into my cottage remarks on your inspired talent. The owner of the local pub where you pulled your own pint of creamy guinness was asking about you guys.I think its great that you experienced the real Ireland in a small local village and had a chance to meet some real local Irish people. It is such a thrill for me to realize that the place inspired you during your visit. I love your photos, your such a good photographer, it easy to see you have a special talent, would you allow me to use a couple of your photos you posted in trip advisor as I would love to have them on the Banba House web site. Hope you will visit us again soon. very best regards ..Ray

Thank you so much, Ray. These are my lines to future guests: a wonderful house in a pretty village, but the host is top of all: charming and helpful, with good reccomendations for any traveler. You're gonna feel immediately at home. Stylish, comfortable, grand, superb house. A gourmet welcoming meal which we all still recall. Perfect situation to travel around and all the facilities nearby. No noises, privacy, room enough for adults to relax and children to enjoy. What else!

Staying at Banba House made our trip in Galway perfect. The house was so comfortable and clean. The proprietor was extremely accommodating and helpful. Every aspect of our stay was catered for. All amenities were within walking distance or already on site. Spacious and well decorated with an artistic flair. Would recommend to anyone. Felt just at home
