We selected a package that was 57 Euro for the half hour shuttle to the dock, ferry ride and an Aran island bed n breakfast return. We stayed at Aran Fisherman which was lovely.

After 1/2 hour bus ride from Galway, along a scenic coast, we arrived at the ferry dock. Another hour or so to Inishmore, Aran Islands by ferry. We seemed to go from civilization to another world! The geography is rocky and severe, with few houses, few cars, few shops, a couple of pubs. There are few comforts here, as we know them, as people seem to like to live a plain, simple life. Tourism seems to bring in the most capital, with fishing next. We were met by several gentlemen hawking their tour buses to see the island, followed by a few horse drawn buggies. We opted for a small van, since the rain made the horse choice rather daunting. As we took the tour around the small island, the driver pointed out the smallest church in the world (7' x 10'), an old graveyard, many stone walls, small, plain houses, more stone walls, etc. He asked if we wanted to go up to the fort, but seemed to be warning us that it involved a lot of walking and climbing, and since it was raining and windy, we took option #2, which was a continuation of the island tour. More of the same. OK...maybe we made the wrong choice in not going to the fort. The view is supposed to be spectacular...but we had done the Cliffs of Moher the day before, and felt like we had been there, done that. If we did the wrong thing, I'm sure we'll be told that, and we'll try again another time! Since we didn't do the fort, we arrived back at the ferry with 2 hours to spare. Shop in the Aran Sweater Market...OK, 1 1/2 hours to go. A lovely lunch at a local inn/restaurant filled some time. Good lunch, by the way. (I don't remember the name, but it was a large-ish yellow building.) A couple of drinks in a small pub over a town hostel finished up our wait for the ferry. The ride back in wind and rain, rather rough seas...hmm. As you can tell, it wasn't our most favorite side trip.

The ships going to the islands are new and ride great! They have bathrooms on board and refreshments to buy as well. The boat team works hard and we left right on time! It was a sunny day and the sea was calm...no complaints here!
HINT: sit near the back of the boat and you will feel less rocking motion..if you are sensitive to this.
