“Very poor hostel”
Reviewed July 19, 2014 via mobile

Staff werent very helpful. Top floor room floorboards shook when you walked on them. There was one shower on our floor that seemed to service four rooms. We had booked for two nights and at 10.30 on the first morning a staff member banged repeatedly on our door that check out was at 10. We explained we were there for two nights and he wandered off to another room and banged on that door. The room was very warm and the my sheet had a brown stain... we didnt bother staying the second night. Thankfully found somewhere else nearby.

Gotta say we had a great time here. Quaint in a good area close to the city center, friendly staff, clean amenities and overall a warm experience. If you're looking for a hilton vacation go elsewhere but if you'd like a genuine and affordable experience of Galway this is the place as they are very helpful with getting the most out of your travels and gave us great recommendations.

This was a solid hostel in Galway! The city is so small, and the hostel was relatively easy to find from the bus station. We were able to get around the city easily and quickly, and the staff helped us book a day trip to Aillwee Cave and the Cliffs of Moher! The bathrooms could use some updating, and there is no soap at the hostel. Overall, though, it was perfectly adequate for our two days in Galway.

We had a great stay in the Woodquay Hostel and found it to be good value for money. Julie and Clive were incredibly welcoming and helpful and we felt they genuinely wanted to make sure we had the best time possible in Galway. Julie is a gem, we had some awesome conversations and she passed on some great advice for our future travels. We weren't left wanting for anything during our stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay again if we are ever in Galway.

It was clean and warm, but that's about the only good thing I can say. We had very bad communication from all staff we encountered. We were originally given a discounted rate when booking by phone but on arrival were told that it was 'wrong' and we had to pay the full amount. This wasn't really a big deal but the owner was very unapologetic, it was just 'no way are you getting it that cheap'. We also believed we had paid for the spare bed in our 6-bed dorm but apparently not as a new guest was put in there on our second night. The staff member who entered our room to tell us this was also fairly rude about the whole thing and offered no resolution, just saying we'd have to talk to the owner about it in the morning. The room next to us had a loud drunken group who shouted and banged around until 4/5am both nights. Toilets were clean but there were two showers on our floor with completely transparent glass so if you want privacy you have to lock the door and make everyone else wait. Basically the rooms and facilities were nothing to write home about and staff made us feel more like an inconvenience than a guest. Wouldn't stay there again or recommend to anyone unless you have no other option.

Stayed at the hostel over the weekend with friends. Booked two rooms, upon arrival was only given one key per room and not a key per person. Second night having got in from a night out we found a random person had been put in one of the beds we had booked and paid for. Night manager extremely unhelpful and rude when confronted about this. Bathrooms in the hostel were also dirty. The only positive point is that the hostel is in a good location. Although I would quite happily return to Galway I would not stay at this hostel again.

This hostel was well located and the staff were really helpful, especially Julie who was so welcoming from the start. She gave us all the information on Galway, gave us discount on tours to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren and she was easy to get along with and full of energy. I really recommend this hostel if you're travelling around the Irish countryside. It's one of the best I've stayed in. It may be older than the other hostels, but Julie and the staff bring the place to life and make it feel like home for the few days that you're there. There could be more toilets, but if you're ok with sharing and waiting your turn it's not a problem! It was quite cheap for Galway City and we got our money's worth.
