First off, the waitresses were very nice and I could not fault them apart from lack of experience.

11 of us went there for dinner, it was with work and we had visitors present. First, when we got the menu about six of us decided to have the Mussels, when we went to order the Mussels we were informed there were none, as there were already very few starters on the menu this really limited the selection. When quizzed the waitress stated the fish delivery had not arrived that day, this was a Friday night and meant there would be no mussels on the menu for the whole weekend or any other fish dish for that matter.
Moving on, the fish cakes (s) starter arrived (they had fish for this!!!!), there was only one fish cake on the plate and it was miserable and looked very lonely by its self!!! It was a very poor starter.
Moving onto the main course, there were 8 steaks ordered, only 7 arrived to the table, all seven were 7 different sizes, and the range was vast, they were all the same thickness but completely different sizes, it was totally bizarre, one of the steaks was very very small and was obviously the end of the cut.
The 8th steak turned up 20min later after everyone had finished theirs. We did complain and the waitress apologised and stated the chef was not happy with the first steak and cooked another. This is unacceptable.
These are the main points of the night, there were more, like the steak lobbed on top of the mash/onions and the overall display was terrible.

Sorry for ranting but this was a terrible night. Sad to see such a place with a good name go down hill so much and so fast.

My advice is stay away, there are numerous other restaurants in Galway to eat in. I would eat in Supermacs before going to Cookes again.

At the top of the street where Cookes is located, and outside the restaurant on two different boards, was the "2 courses for 14.95" price. We reviewed the menu, thought it to be good values at 14.95 so we went in. At the time of getting our menu's, we asked about the 14.95 price and were told it was not available (Saturday evening/7pm) - we commented that there were 3 signs offering it and were told those boards should have been taken down.

Slightly annoyed and unsure if the advertising was a ploy to get customers in, we proceeded to order anyway - we had the tapas plate to share for starters - it was only average, the cheese was not fresh, the pate was out of the fridge too long and was starting to melt on the board and overall was not good value for money.
We both had a stir fry for mains, it was fine, but you could make the same at home.
We did not bother with dessert.
I ate here only once before and that time, we encounted a very rude waiter, he was not there this time thankfully.
While from both the outside and inside, the restaurant is cosy, nicely lit and overall quite comfortable, there are two big issues with this restaurant:
1. the priceing offered in 3 places outside were not honoured. And when we came out of the restaurant over an hour later, the main board at the top of the street to attract customers, WAS STILL IN PLACE.
2. the staff are too young - there was no manager, and nobody over the age of 25 working that we could see. This is not good enough. There are plenty of restaurants in Galway, I would not go back to Cookes.

Friendly staff. Historical building in the centre of Galway. Visited it 3 times - not disappointed. Will recommend to friends. It looks like a wine bar from the outside - step inside & you will be pleasantly surprised.

Went there Sat night 25th August. We got a reservation for 9pm great. We didn't want to stay long so we skipped starter and went straight for a main dish. I ordered the sirloin (med rare) with onions, mushrooms and chips and a pint of larger. My wife ordered the Mexican chicken fajita and a white wine. This is where the good times stopped. My beer arrived in a glass which was previously used for milk (bubbles form along the side of the glass). We seemed to be waiting no length when the waitress returned with our dishes. The first hint of trouble was when your steak arrives and the chips are presented on the main plate, this might be acceptable in a canteen, but in a restaurant paying €20 for the privilege. The steak was rare, so was sent back to be cooked properly. It was returned ok, but the size and quality just weren’t there. My wife fajitas arrived in what could only be described as a wrap. Normally fajitas are served as a sizzling dish and you make up your own…not here. The waitress returned to ask if everything was ok, so I asked her was the fajita dish supposed to be a sandwich or a main course. She got embarrassed and said it was the main. My wife left behind some of the fajita, it was not very nice. Needless to say we did not stick around for desert. We paid full price and will never return and advise anyone with any sense to check out some other great restaurants in Galway. If you want the fajitas, go to The Huntsman’s, if you want a wrap go to Subway, if you want a steak do not try Cooke’s. In what appears to be one of the best cost saving measures, all the waitresses are very (very) young and no-one with any authority was available when we asked to speak with the manager.
We arrived at 9pm, and were already on the way out the Tuam road at 9:50pm, which will give you some indication as to our experience!
Never will I darken its door again

Simple good food. Very good service in a great location. A warm place to have a meal and even with a crowd did not seem to noisy. I think the menu was well thought out with something for everyone's taste. Wine was a little dull by the glass but I did check out the main list.
