The Medieval Period or Middle Ages lasted for a millennium, from the 5th to the 15th centuries. Reminiscent of the approximate 2,000 Irish castles, Galway’s Medieval City Walls are part of what was the city’s defenses against seagoing marauders during those ten centuries. Spaniards in the 1500s added four Spanish Arches to those walls. Galway’s civic pride in these historic walls is displayed throughout the city, but I found most interesting the restored walls and garrisons inside the huge Eyre Square Shopping Centre where most of the accompanying photos were taken. There is no cost to view something akin to China’s Great Wall, and much of the history can be absorbed regardless of weather. This is a phenomenal attraction, especially for those with children.
