“Quite small inside and not what you would expect from a museum, more local interest.”

The museum was near the coach drop off so easily accessible. The local hotel nearby allowed you to use their toilet facilities which was useful. The pubs were very friendly and the food delicious although expensive.

“It's free”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

A really interesting museum with some great content and history. For a free museum, I think it's wonderful with great (rotating) exhibits and some standards content as well. It was a great first stop in Galway, to familiarize us with the city before we wandered around by ourselves. Give it an hour of your time, it deserves it.

“Needs more historical content”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

Not a great deal of actual content on Galway city history. There are a number of narrative panels and some archeological finds but more about the growth of Galway from 1000 onwards would be more interesting. I had hoped to find much more about the city architecture, e.g. the city walls and churches.

As other reviewers have said, it is free. However, I would rather pay a small fee and have more content. Too much of the space is currently allocated to art exhibitions.

“A small gem”
Reviewed May 21, 2014

I am surprised by many of the negative reviews of this place...but perhaps some people have huge expectations of what a museum should be. I went with my husband and a friend and we enjoyed this museum immensely. There was quite a lot of stuff on the ancient remains of the area up to the era of Pádraic Ó Conaire a local writer. In addition to the permanent collection we saw 3 temporary exhibits. One of paintings of water themes; one of a very interesting project of students making their own self portraits and choosing self portraits from established artists; and one small exhibit of textile arts. There was also a section of cinema relating to Galway. Okay, it's not the Louvre, but we spent a very enjoyable hour here and the building itself is nice with a great view of the rushing River Corrib below.

“Mehhh”

Just a few things to see inside. Anything impressive. The best part is that there are some well preserved swords and it's free.
