“fantastic family owned hotel”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

have just returned from a weekend stay at the menlo park hotel and im really missing the large clean bedroom and bathroom of room 235. when we arrived we were told that we had been upgraded because of my husbands birthday. we have stayed at this hotel twice before and we were happy on both occasions with the bedrooms. this time we were more than happy when we entered room 235. it was at the end of the corridor and had a seperate area for wardrobe and stand for suitcase. there was also an iron, ironing board, safe and tea making facilities. the bathroom was huge with a large corner bath and lovely decor. their was also a large shower with a rain shower head. the bedroom was also large with a corner sofa and coffee tabel. there was a dressing table and also a small table with 2 chairs below the large flat scrren wall mounted tv. the bed was huge and comfortable. we had no trouble sleeping at night and heard no traffic or people sounds. breakfast was plentiful and set us up for the day. we found all of the staff to be pleasent and hard working at all times. the hotel was about 15 or 20 mins walk into galway city which was welcomed after the large breakfasts. the only gripe we had with this hotel was with the key cards. ours never seemed to work after 1 usage. we were continually returning to the reception to get them validated over and over again although we always knew before we went up to the room that they were not working as you had to use the key card to enter the lift, therefore we didnt have far to go to the reception to fix this. we will be returning to the menlo park hotel even if we dont receive an upgraded room. it is a lovely clean family owned hotel. thanks for the pleasent stay

Room Tip: ask for a high floor room to avoid any noise from the bar

Dear Rebecca
John Francis, the owner, and the staff were delighted with your excellent rating and review.
We are so pleased that you liked the atmosphere of the hotel. We do like to think that the family feel makes a difference. Many of us have been with the hotel for many years and quite a few have moved up through the ranks to supervisory and management positions. The owner and the General Manager value training and development and the programmes the hotel has participated in such as Failte ireland Service Excellence and Best Practise have provided a great platform on which to develop and grow....
Thank you so much for your kind words, they are much appreciated...

I had booked to stay at this hotel for a 3 night stay (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).in Septenmber 2012. We had booked an upgrade which they called a Superior Room. when we booked into the hotel we were given the keys to our room. On arrival all we could smell was smoking. We had requested non smoking but i thought this was standard. However when i phoned reception i was informed the 2 rooms directly opposite us were designated smoking rooms. By the way these 2 rooms were not at the end of a corridor no they were right in the middle of the corridor but we were unlucky to be placed directly opposite. The room smelt like a brewery so we asked to be moved. They moved us to another room but pre-warned us there was a wedding underneath and we may hear a little noise until 1.30 am. In the end the noise that night was acceptable but what they had forgotten to mention was that at 6 o clock the next morning there would be at least 6-7 lorriy deliveries right beneath our window, including lorry reversing warning bleepers, engines left running and unloading. I called down to reception at 6.15 but all that was on duty was a night porter and he wasn't interested.
At 8 am i spoke to the on duty manager who just listened (as i believe this was not the first complaint about this room and deliveries), in the end we booked out and left the hotel that morning (and our stay was meant to be in their upgraded Superior Rooms). The hotel did not charge but i would rather have paid and had a nice stay.

Dear Paul,
Thankyou very much for your review. We would of course have also wanted you to have a nice stay with no issues and this is always our objective. We do still offer smoking rooms even though this matter is often hotly debated at Management meetings. We have some regular guests who are smokers and we still try to accommodate everyone. Thankfully this does not often present a problem and only a very small percentage of our rooms are smoking rooms as we do not let these rooms to non-smokers. In relation to the delivery vans, we have taken note of your point about this and thankfully although we get deliveries every day of the week, it is usually just a couple of vans arriving with milk and bread and again it does not often present as an issue with our guests. Our suppliers have already been made aware that they should keep noise to a minimum, but we can now re-iterate that. It was regrettable that your stay was marred in the way. As always we thank you for your feedback as this is what helps us to consider and develop our operations. We have taken note of your observations about the staff. Your points will be fully discussed at the Management meeting and possible solutions to the points you have raised will be considered. Kind regards from all of us at the Menlo Park.

after a long drive we decided to stay here for the night.
very welcoming on arrival and no bother checking in.
rooms were very very comfortable , bed was quality, room had heavy furnishings but felt just about right. all the usual things you require in the room and a spacious bathroom.
we had a drink in the bar but didnt eat , bar was quite open and bright which i personally dont like in a hotel but was fine nonetheless.
breakfast was very good and checkout effortless.
would stay here again over other hotels in the area.
worth mentioning that its not in the centre so if your out in town you need a taxi so factor that into weekend costs.

I was a bit disappointed when I saw that the hotel was on the outskirts of the city as I usually prefer to be more centrally located but it was no more than a 15 minute walk to the city centre and the city is not that big so shops and restaurants etc. were quite convenient. The small inconvenience of being located on the outskirts of the city was more than compensated by the great price I got for a spacious twin room wuth an excellent breakfast included. The room was very clean, the beds were very comfortable and depspite being close to a busy road the room was very quiet and my wife and I had no problem getting a good nights sleep. All the staff were very pleasant, efficient and helpful. I certainly would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone thinking of visiting the city.
The city itself is like a lot of cities but it is the surrounding attractions such as Cong, Kylemore Abbey, The Burren, the Cliffs of Moher and the Connemarra scenery generally that make it a place worth visiting. You can get a day long tour for 20 euros, great value for money and it is much easier to see the sights when you are not driving.

We arrived at 2 o'clock Monday and were too early for check in, so we decided to have carvery in the bar while we waited. Food was delicious really enjoyed it, we went back to the front desk and were greeted by a lovely receptionist named Stella, who checked us in very quickly, informed us of where everything was, breakfast times etc. she was very friendly and pleasant. We booked a king room which I was very happy with, huge room, separate area for the ward robe and a lovely big bathroom. Particularly liked the showers, much better than most showers in other hotels I have stayed in, huge modern shower heads and powerful hot showers, great after a day touring the cliffs of Moher and the burren, which convienently I had prebooked through the hotels website, really enjoyed the day tour. We had a great time here and would have no hesitation in coming back or recommending to others. Thanks for a great stay guys, keep up the good work!
