As I do not drink tea or coffee, I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to 'grading' hot chocolate. I decided to do some 'research' and set myself the task of sampling hot chocolate on sale in our local restaurants and food outlets in Galway. My mission is simple - I want to find the outlet providing the best hot chocolate in Galway. I am using a score out of 10. Historically, Goya's was always my favourite. The cups and saucers are pretty and the hot chocolate was finished off with a layer of thinly grated chocolate on a thick froth! No more! I was so disappointed with my last 2 hot chocolates there - the chocolate shavings have been replaced with a very bitter tasting powder hence my quest for an alternative venue. I began in Moran's on the Weir. No marshmallows provided score: a mediocre 4/10. I visited Renzo in Eyre Street twice - no marshmallows provided - first visit 4/10: second visit 3/10. Revive across the road was my next destination scoring a nice 5/10. I called to the Oslo in Salthill which scored a poor 3/10. The Huntsman was next and I could only manage 3 sips - no marshmallows and such a 'milkey' mixture gaining a poor 3/10. I went back to the Oslo on 16 March and this time got a much better hot chocolate scoring a 5/10. Starbucks in NUIG added marshmallows and a tasty cupful also scoring 5/10. Finally today on a whim I dropped into Mr Waffle. Quel Surpris!!! I was totally amazed to taste such delicious hot chocolate.I really wasn't expecting much as I felt that waffles were the main speciality and simply wanted to add this venue to my research list. I am delighted to report that so far of the 8 outlets I have visited in Galway Mr Waffle is the best. I would score today's hot chocolate 8.5/10. Thank you Mr Waffle and I will be back again very soon. :-))
