Monroe's has always been our favorite spot for breakfast in Galway. It's wildly popular as a live music venue and pub in the evenings, but we always had breakfast there as well, ordering at the bar and eating on one of the booths while listening to interesting Irish talk radio.
Our visits on our last trip to Galway will probably be our last visits to Monroe's.
First, as we were about to slide into our favorite booth I noticed how soiled and greasy the cushions were. Maybe they got brighter lightbulbs, maybe they have stopped cleaning the cushions, maybe they have just reached the end of their life span, but they were truly disgusting. They make you wonder what has so badly soiled those cushions. I didn't even want to sit on them, much less put my purse down on them.
We ate there three times anyway -- after the first time, we moved to a table. The first time, the food was almost as good as we recalled, if a bit greasy. The second time, things were badly cooked and just sloppy -- the butter was hard, the toast cold, the bacon rubbery and fatty, the eggs crispy around the edges. The third time, not only did it take about half an hour for our food to arrive, it was disgusting. The rashers were swimming in grease -- so much so that we actually blotted them with a serviette -- and one of them was so old and overcooked that it was inedible. The toast was delivered a good five minutes after the rest of the food.
We are just mystified about what could have happened after five years of consistent excellence at breakfast at Monroe's. But we won't be back to find out.
