We decided to ignore the bad reviews on here and booked to stay at Wards as we couldn't find anywhere cheaper and so close to all the action in Salthill. Thank goodness we did! We wanted somewhere reasonably priced, close to Galway bay and to the city centre. We got just that, and a cosy little pub filled with tourists and locals alike. Our room was small but completely functional, with a disproportionately large bathroom, but most importantly it was immaculately clean. (I think there are non en suite rooms available, so make sure you clarify which type of room you want before booking!) The breakfasts were outstanding - infact I'd stay here again for the breakfast alone. The full Irish meant I was full for the whole day. Wifi is available in the bar area but not in the rooms, but that's not the end of the world. There was space for about 3 cars in the car park so I'd forewarn them if you'll need somewhere to keep a car. Have to be honest, the walls are a little thin so if you get inconsiderate hotel guests staying there at the same time, their staggering into walls will probably wake you. Could happen in any hotel though. No doubt about it, I will definitely be back to Wards!

If you are used to upscale four star hotels, stay away......... if you like meeting people, surroundings with history, character and quaintness, then give this place a try. Small, but comfortable rooms, attentive staff, nice little pub with good food made for a very pleasant AND very affordable stay.

Room Tip: Take a look at the rooms, if you have a choice........ they come in all shapes and sizes. Mine was very small (but fine for me) and my friend's room was huge with an extra room! Same price!

Our room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Breakfasts were great & staff was welcoming and friendly. Wards represents an excellent value in lodgings in Galway.

But the best reason to go to Wards is the Pub. Locals mix easily with tourists. And the music! Outstanding, best we heard while on our 3 city trek about Ireland.

Wards Hotel/Pub is a true, neighborhood establishment located just 1km from the lower end of Quay St. and MANY pubs and shopping options located in that area. Ward's is a quiet alternative to the larger, more expensive hotels located in/around Eyre Square. Anthony and his staff are very accommodating and offer a level of hospitality you can't really get from a larger chain hotel. With it's modest neighborhood pub downstairs and 14 modest rooms upstairs, Ward's provides a unique alternative when visiting the great city of Galway and all it has to offer. If you're looking for five-star accommodations, room service and a jacuzzi, then Wards isn't the place for you. However, if you want a quiet room in a decent location at a very modest price, along with the chance to stay upstairs from a great neighborhood pub, then Wards is worth a look.
