Can't believe that this restaurant is only ranked 103 out of 1022 in Dublin! I went to see the first 50 and I have been lucky enough to had dinner in some of them; they do not offering consistently the same delicate well balance taste dishes offered from starters to dessert like O'Connel restaurant.

All food is Irish sourced and seems they picked the best of each products offered on the market.

To give you an idea about prices, we paid 75euro and we got 2 starters, 2 mains 2 desserts a bottle of wine, 2 coffees plus complimentary canopy at arrival.

Staff is very attentive and kind, atmosphere is relaxed with space between tables. It was a great Tuesday night dinner!

A true tasty surprise, and for sure, we will be back!

The only downside was the damp smell in the entrance hall (just outside the restaurant doors) but it would not put you off if you know what beautiful dinner expect you inside.

Thank you DogoDublin,
Absolutely great you enjoyed your dinner.
We are currently resolving the 'damp smell' in our entrance.
We really like the 'coco mat' at the entrance but now have to 'admit defeat', having changed the mat twice in 2 years. The mat seems to soak up the rain from customers shoes and just does not dry out quickly enough.
We are therefore going to tile the area and/or get a more suitable mat which can be regularly exchanged.

We booked an early bird dinner with friends. This was our first visit. The entrance to the restaurant (which we learned is a converted saloon / pub) is adjacent to the entrance (pass) to the kitchen and we were met by frenetic noisy activity and were ignored for quite a while (not a good first impression!). Service was attentive and friendly however there was a marked difference in the quality of our meals - mine was ok however my partners was cold and tasteless (we did not mention this as we did not want to embarrass our friends). As the food was poor it was bad value. This may simply have been a bad experience in the pre Xmas rush however will we be rushing back - eh.....no!

Well that is a second negative review about our Christmas Season. Two negative reviews too many. I promise that we will convene immediately and take action. We clearly must ask ourselves some very obvious questions. We respect our customers and their expectations. We consider our duty to deliver on our customer's expectations as an imperative. We apologise for failing to deliver.

O'Connell's used to be the well-known Madigan's pub in Donnybrook and its interior still looks similar in some respects. That being said, it's a perfectly good place to spend an hour or so, despite the fact that we were a little cold when we called in for an early bird dinner on New Year's Day. The menu is reasonably comprehensive and I liked the fact that you can buy a bottle of any wine that you'd like from the carte at a discounted rate. For example, one bottle at EUR30.50 can be bought for EUR18.50. As to the food, well, it's bistro quality and quantity all round. The onion soup was very good and filling, the burger well presented (good chips) without being in any way memorable. Good pheasant and some nice kidneys rounded out the meals. The vegetables were OK too, but I don't care for puree of root vegetables. The potato gratin was quite wet. One point that should be made is that O'Connell's are careful to accommodate coeliacs and will do whatever they can to make sure that meals are free from gluten. We didn't try the desserts, but they looked OK. The dining room was well filled, which shows that people like coming to O'Connell's. Total cost for three, including a bottle of OK Cotes du Rhone was just over EUR100.

The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was lively and inviting. However, the food was substandard. We had four courses, of which the main was the best, not the best of a bad lot but very tasty all on it's own. I could not say a nice word about the rest of the food that we were served. They messed up the simple things, the soup was inedible and the dessert was bitter. I am putting this bad experience down to it being the Xmas season.

Good Evening Gwendilater,
We are so disappointing to have let you down. We have clearly not been attentive enough - please do accept my personal apologies. The basics must include tasting and seasoning a soup and making sure an Apple & Mince Meat Tart is to the correct degree of sweetness - so we have failed. Let me assure you that we will correct ourselves immediately. It is reassuring to read that the Main Course was enjoyed and that the atmosphere was good. Our thought process is that our December customers are our year-round customers ... mind and respect the higher volume of customers in December and they return throughout the year. We see December particularly as a time to spoil our customers - I am sorry and must accept that in this instance we failed you and ourselves. I commit to improving those points from tomorrow.
Please, I would be pleased to hear from you on tom@oconnellsdonnybrook.com we would be very pleased to make amends.
Tom O'Connell,
Proprietor

I had read so much about Darina Allen's brother Tom O'Connell over the years, I just had to visit his highly recommended restaurant restaurant and it certainly met all our expectations, especially meeting Tom himself who is so totally dedicated to excellency.
