You know what to expect when visiting a tourist area. Restaurants that have an endless supply of new customers, most of whom are on their one and only visit to that destination. This can mean the restaurant is somewhat cavalier in their attitude; it's a fair bet that they will never see this customer again, onto the next bunch tomorrow.
The (Gallagher’s) Boxty House in the heart of Dublin's Temple Bar does not fit this description. I cannot think of many restaurants I’ve ever been to that outdo it for service. The food also happens to be outstanding and great value for money.
I was on my own, having arrived for a next day business meeting, and I wanted to savour some of traditional fare offered here (my mum being from Dublin originally, this brought back some distant memories of home cooked food). I arrived at about 7.30, and ordered ‘Dublin Coddle’ . I was served this excellent stew type dish within approximately ten minutes, (my drink having been served seconds after I ordered it).
Then came the entertainment. As I was on my own, I sat at one of the smaller tables against the wall near the entrance. I watched as the ‘maître d', a lovely lady called Theresa, dealt with the incoming customers. Lots of customers. A continuous, unrelenting, unstoppable stream of hopeful customers poured through the door while I was there. Some had booked, some had not. All were immediately acknowledged. None had to wait more than 4-5 minutes to be seated. The fantastic service was a joy to behold. She was unflappable - as were the rest of the staff, and magically you never felt that you were being rushed. I must congratulate the management of the Boxty House on selection and training of superb staff, across the board.
Again in a tourist area such as this, there is a risk that customers will not return no matter how good the service and quality of food. I am happy to say I visit Dublin fairly regularly, and I certainly will be returning to the Boxty House. Go there.
