Attraction details
Owner description: The Merry Ploughboy is the only pub in Ireland owned and managed by musicians, and it is the 'hands on' approach from the owners that makes a visit to the Merry Ploughboy the highlight of many people's trip to Ireland. The two hour Irish music & Irish dancing show (which takes place nightly at the pub) has been awarded "Best Dinner/Entertainment Event in Ireland" and the pub is the current "Music Pub of the Year" in Ireland. Owners and musicians, The Merry Ploughboys, have been performing together for 25 years making their show the longest running show in Ireland hosted continuously by the same performers. The pub is located about 20 minutes south of Dublin City centre with complimentary car parking. It is easily accessed by taxi or if you are staying in the city centre we recommend our shuttle transfer service (just 7.50 euro return fare). The transfer by luxury executive coach offers an elevated view of the scenic Southside of Dublin city. After the show, the coach will drop you back as close as practical to your accommodation. Reservations are essential, however online bookings for the dinner & show (and shuttle transfer if required) can be made in real-time on our own website. We operate a "ticketless" booking system. You will receive a unique booking reference number on your email receipt and our floor manager will have all your details when you arrive at the pub.

“An evening of good food and fun”

I chose the Irish Beef, plenty to eat and very tender. The show was very entertaining and included singing and irish dancing.

“You won't be disappointed.”
Reviewed September 23, 2012 via mobile

Great nights entertainment. Food great, music and dancing were first class. You will be singing and clapping and wanting to join in. I will be bringing my kids and husband next time we are in Dublin as this is suitable for all. I was on a girls weekend and we all thoroughly enjoyed the night.

“Food and fun”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

We were a couple of Irish in a group that was mostly American so the music and food were new to them but not to us - in fact, we were a little anxious about whether both might end up being plastic! We need not have worried, the venue is very well organised, the atmosphere upstairs (in a huge area that sits at least 200) was warm and buzzing, the musicians who own and run this pub really know what the audience will appreciate and it's not phoney. We had a meal and then the entertainment followed. If you have the sense to avoid chowder and fish, you should have a great meal (how could fish and chowder be perfect for 200!), the lamb shanks and the soup are tasty, the desserts are very tempting. The service is terrific, lots of waiters and waitresses on hand immediately to get drinks or CDs or Merry Ploughboy t-shirts.
Of course visitors can come just for the music and dance (and several did) but it's nice to eat and make a night of it. The music is good quality and the way the musicians draw the audience into the show really charmed the stony-faced (yes, there were some there, let me not name their nationality, but they got to smile and even sing in the end).
So if you're a tourist in Ireland, you would probably enjoy this hugely. If you're Irish, you can safely bring your overseas friends here without fear of squirming with embarrassment at stage-Irishry, and the measure of its quality is that you'll end up singing yourself.

“Better than I had expected”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

I expected the worst: amateurs. However, the professional musicians were excellent. The Irish dancers were amateur but made up for it with energy and enthusiasm. Lost one star because our food took a long time to come and was simply average.
