I visited this establishment twice when I was home last week – once on a mid week afternoon and another on Saturday mid morning. I sat had a coffee and brownie and have to say both were pretty damn good.
On Saturday, I returned with a friend and we were talked through the selection of cakes which ranged from cinnamon and walnut rolls to gluten free seed cakes. The staff took the time to talk to us and were clearly quite proud of their work. I had the chicken and harissa paste sandwich, with cucumber salad. It was really lovely, the bread really fresh, the chicken proper chicken breast, with delicate flavours. We both had the scone with orange blossom butter for afters which was AMAZING. I have honestly never normally gone for plain scones but these were so good.
The layout of the place is minimalistic but not in a bare way, there is a window to the kitchen and you can see all the fresh produce and a lovely little outdoor area that can be covered in the rain. This is a proper little gem in a city that has undergone a stretch and contraction of mediocre restaurants. I really, really hope Brother Hubbard stays and grows – it’s a credit to the city.
