“161 - Best Grub in Rathmines”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2014

Having just returned from a wonderful trip to Ireland and staying in Rathmines in Dublin for 3 weeks, we came upon a fabulous little Bistro called 161 - located at 161 Upper Rathmines Road. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and staff are friendly, chatty and very accommodating. Greg the Kiwi manager is a breath of fresh air and so is the menu. Something to please everyone. I had the fish cakes with asian slaw - a red cabbage cole slaw with an asian slant but very subtle on the palate and my Mum had the Potato & Leek soup with homemade brown bread. We shared a bowl of chunky fries - everything was completely fresh and delicious and and so reasonable. It was a delightful and unexpected experience and I would recommend evyone head down to 161!

“Kira Kiwi delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2014

Dined here last Saturday and had the very keenly priced Early Bird menu-2 courses for €19.50. We opted to share a starter and dessert. Starter was a bruschetta-toasted sourdough bread, tomato, olive tapinade and just the right amount of olive oil. Main courses were the 161 Burger and beer battered Fish and Chips-both came with the largest chips (excellent) I have ever seen and mint pea puree with the latter. Burger quality was very good and the fresh fish (haddock) was done in a deliciously light and crispy tempura batter. Dessert was a seasonal fruits coulis with icecream. All of this was washed down with the house white, a light Orvietto.

The restaurant is owned/managed by Greg Kira, a most convivial host from New Zealand. The ambiance is simple chic with light painted floorboards and walls. It is unpretentious, serving relevatively simple food of exceptional quality at a very reasonanble price-our total bill was €60 plus tip. We have been here may times before, and will be many times again.

“Good food at a fair price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2014

I have been to lunch here several times in the past year and have been very happy with the quality of the lunch. In an area of Dublin where pricing often seems recession-proof, the costing represents good value. But the Tuesday Early Bird Special was a real find. Available all night on Tuesdays at a total cost of 50 Euro for two persons you get two courses, plus tea/coffee and a bottle of white or red house Italian wine. Different Early Bird specials are available in the early evening on other days - call the café bistro to check details. The range of choice, while limited, was very satisfactory and the lady managing on the night we ate was first class. Friendly, attentive and very welcoming, she made the place hum. A no frills, good food location.

“Beautiful, Cosy and Quality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2013

Really love this place. It is without doubt the best place to eat in Rathmines. Breakfast, brunch and lunch were always top notch here and now evening opening has made it even more attractive. The owner is simply brilliant with his guests and not surprisingly the staff are also great. The interior is chic, cool and warm. It is a popular spot so don't be put off by a 5-10 min wait for a table on weekends. It's very much worth it.

“A Very Welcome Addition to the D6 Neighborhood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2013

Like many residents of the Milltown/Darty area, we often walk into Rathmines and Rathgar to do some shopping and are always looking for "somewhere new" for a snack. So the 161 Cafe Bistro is certainly a welcome addition to the neighborhood. It's very cutely decorated inside and the service is particularly friendly. Their brunch menu, which is reasonably priced, has all the usual classics (like french toast, eggs benedict and a tradditional fry) but it also includes some unexpected dishes; the shakshuka is really very good indeed (I don't think I've ever had it in Europe) and I'm looking forward now to also trying their huevos rancheros. We haven't had the chance yet to visit for their dinner menu but we'll certainly do that, maybe next time we're visiting the nearby Swan cinema; we have however noticed that they seem to be doing a very good trade throughout the day and evenings. I'd certainly wish them every success, it's always great to see quality little places like this popping-up in under-served areas.
