First off, kudos to Don who gave a witty and self-deprecating tour of the Aras gardens (which are really superb). Therein, however, lies the problem; we turned up with the intention of taking the tour of the house; but it was closed for repairs. Er, is the height of the tourist season the best time to be scheduling this work, lads??? Get a grip! BTW, food in the Phoenix Park Visitors' Centre (staff, please note, Visitors', not Visitor's - there's more than one!) was excellent in terms of taste and value.

Built in 1751 by park ranger Nathaniel Clements, originally known as Viceregal Lodge as it was home to the British Viceroys. Later it housed the Governors General. It was just a modest hunting lodge, built in the Phoenix Park, the largest green space within a city in the world. The East Wing was added for the state visit of Queen Victoria. In 1938 it became the official residence for the President of the Republic of Ireland. While in the Phoenix Park you can also visit Dublin Zoo.

Great trip. Get free bus from Phoenix park visitor centre. I think it is only on saturdays. You cannot book in advance of the day but you can turn up early on sat morning & book for a particular time during that day. It was very educational & gave good background to the history of the house & had a lot of interesting stories about the old British rulers & the new government after the free state was founded. Trip lasted about an hour was enjoyed by family & friends from Northern Ireland.

Having passed by the Aras for years I jumped at the chance to get in for a look. Tours go from the Phoenix Park visitors centre and are free. We were there around Christmas so the place was beautifully decorated. Definitely worth a trip

Tours of the official residence of the Irish President take place on a Saturday and tickets are only issued on the day from the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre. You cannot book in advance or online.

The tour is guided and it's well worth doing, especially as it's free. Not only do you get the opportunity to see the beautifully ornate inside of the building. You also get a history of the building and its contents. The guide was very informative and encouraged people to ask questions. If you are lucky you may get to see the President because apparently he often comes over to say hello to visitors.
