Owner description: Underneath the church are five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin's most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Shears brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl's of Leitrim. Since Victorian times visitors have descended the vault steps to see the mummies and Bram Stoker, creator of the "Dracula" stories is believed to have visited the vaults in the company of his family. In one vault can be seen the remains of the "Crusader" though in fact he is only 650 years dead. The early visitors to the vaults were responsible for many of the myths and legends surrounding the bodies, though modern scientific investigations have cast doubts on many of these stories. Nevertheless, a visit to the Crypts to see the historic mummies is a remarkable experience.

A local couple had advised us to visit this church during our visit to Dublin. It is only open a couple of hours in the morning and again in the afternoon. You meet your guide in the church and then descend into the crypts where you may not be blamed for thinking you have stepped into a horror film scene. Some of the caskets are open and the guide can tell you some amazing facts about the people who are buried there. Very interesting and highly recommended. Tour lasts about 50 mins and costs 5 euros
with a reduction for seniors and students.

It was an exciting trip, my first impression when I entered the Church was: "This is a normal Church and not so beautiful". But the most important thing about Saint Michan's Church is the remains of people "buried" underground in the The Crypts!

Well, it's impressive, I saw on the web many pictures about crypts before but when you see a real crypt it is awesome, I saw an eight hundred years old mummy that of a crusader; pretty well conserved and well, I touched his finger, the tourist guide said people could touch the finger of the crusader to get good luck - let's wait and see I hope to win the lottery .

However, curiously the tourist guide was the most exciting thing about the trip. He is completely crazy always whispering and mysterious, I was reminded of that character called Igor from Frankenstein, the tourist guide is totally weird.

It's a nice trip to make. And as for the tourist guide, I know he was pretending, wasn't he?

This church is really cool. The church itself is quite plain, but still has a lot of history. The tour of the crypts is very interesting. There are two sections...one you can't see too much because they need to be kept dark, but light from the hallway helps illuminate them. The second one has the actual mummified bobies in it and you are able to actually go in that one and take pictures, plus you are encouraged to touch one for good luck!! It's a pretty quick tour. You could do it in about 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the group. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Fascinating! Tour guide was so appropriate for the occasion... bordering on barking mad but just so informative and entertaining.
No further detail, so as not to spoil other's enjoyment.
Good value stop off prior to a visit to Jameson's.

Been several times before and found it fascinating going again next month taking my teenage son who was too young to visit last time we where there.I thought it would be very scary being in a crypt surronded by skulls etc but it was very well presented and not scary at all. Also going to Kilmainham Gaol which I found equally fasinating but very sad always brings a tear to my eye reading the prisoner's letters to their families that are on display
