Owner description: Underneath the church are five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin's most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Shears brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl's of Leitrim. Since Victorian times visitors have descended the vault steps to see the mummies and Bram Stoker, creator of the "Dracula" stories is believed to have visited the vaults in the company of his family. In one vault can be seen the remains of the "Crusader" though in fact he is only 650 years dead. The early visitors to the vaults were responsible for many of the myths and legends surrounding the bodies, though modern scientific investigations have cast doubts on many of these stories. Nevertheless, a visit to the Crypts to see the historic mummies is a remarkable experience.

An amazing hidden gem. Not only do you get to see some fantasically preserved mummies but you can shake hands with an 800 year old mummified crusader (for luck). A must for anyone who, like me, always wanted to be Indiana Jones....

We dont live to far from here & decided to be a tourist for the day & do some sightseeing.
St Michan's Church is just off the Luas line, a short walk from the four courts.
I think we paid €4 each in & there was only 4 of us on the tour which was great. The tour guide gives you the history on the church & than brings you down into the Vaults. Be warned, you see dead bodies from hundreds of years ago & you can climb over broken coffins with to touch the body of a nun as far as I remember. If you rub her finger, this is supposed to bring you luck!
Very intresting & well worth €4.

this was a church we wanted to see given the stories, etc of the crypts in the basement but unfortunately we got there just as the tour time closed - the grounds themselves are quite interesting too with many old graves

Our tour guide was one of those wonderful Irish characters you remember always. We went to St. Michan's on a friends recommendation and are very happy we did.
