Owner description: Christ Church Cathedral is one of Dublin's oldest buildings, a leading visitor attraction and a place of pilgrimage for almost 1,000 years. Famous for its breathtaking beauty, magnificent architectural features and wonderful floor tiles, Christ Church is also popular as a venue and is host to many high profile concerts throughout the year. It is home to the tomb of Strongbow, leader of the Normans, who captured Dublin in 1170. The Medieval Crypt, one of the largest in Britain and Ireland, extends under the entire Cathedral and contains The Mummified cat and rat, trapped in the organ in the 1860s. Guided tours, including the belfry, available up to five times a day Monday to Saturday.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access

Maybe it was just the tomb of Strongbow in the aisles that got me floored, but this church was my introduction to Dublin and I couldn't have asked for a better one. The crypt downstairs is pretty eery (even with the cafe installed) and interesting. In the Spring, there was a small covered market outside selling candy, fruits, and nuts. Overall, an Idyllic Irish Cathedral.

We went to Easter Service at Christ Church Cathedral. What a wonderful way to take in the magnificence of this church. Trumpets, a terrific choir, premier vestments, pomp and ceremony. The service began with a welcome to everyone. All where invited to celebrate in Holy Communion. (If you go to Sunday or afternoon services there is no charge to be in this church)
After the service we met the Archbishop and he gave us a brief history of the church and was very pleased that we came to services. While we wandered around upstairs, people were delighted to provide a history of the stained glass, the baptism font, and longbow's tomb. I was delighted to see all the embroidery and needlework on the alter and kneelers. I was most impressed with the eagle lectern, which the Bible rests and lessons are read. The Bible sits in the wings of the Eagle.
We were invited for tea and biscuits down in the crypt. The crypt is huge! We found the cat and the rat. Also a very nice little gift shop. I would advise anyone, of any faith to attend church in this Cathedral. It was perfect experience.

Shown around by the Archbishop himself! Wow! Glad you enjoyed your time in Christ Church. Everyone is welcome to all services here - the Easter ones are some of the most special in the year so it was great you were able to experience them.

A bit boring?! Oh dear... Glad you enjoyed your visit anyway. Maybe you should have taken a guided tour and rung the cathedral bells - it's a bit more exciting for the real thrill seekers out there!

We went primarily to see the "cat and the rat" in the crypt..mummified remains of a cat that had obviously been chasing the rat and they got stuck and mummified but there is so much more to see!..the history and superb architecture are fascinating and the exhibition in the crypt is something else..nice little gift shop..well worth the trip!
