Owner description: With free admission and described by the Lonely Planet as 'not just the best museum in Ireland, but one of the best in Europe', the Chester Beatty Library is a must-see on any Dublin visitor's itinerary. As the only museum in Ireland to win 'European Museum of the Year' and rated consistently in the top 6 of TripAdvisor's list of 'Top things to do in Dublin', the library's rich collections from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe open a window on the artistic treasures of the great cultures and religions of the world.

The grounds were closed due to the recent inauguration of the EU president but the exhibits were fantastic!

“a gem of culture in the centre of Dublin”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2013

It is wonderful to have such a wonderful collection of Eastern artifacts in the centre of Dublin. Anyone with an interest in Asian History could spend a day in this museum and the general exhibitions are free to view. There is also a very good cafe on site and as it is situated in the grounds of Dublin Castle it should be a MUST for anyone visiting the capitol city.

“A must visit!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

The Chester Beatty Library has one of the most impressive collection of religious texts. They have what I believe is the oldest surviving copies of the gospels, which alone is worth the trip. There are also religious artifacts from other major religions, and the curators did a great job of showing the relationship between the religions represented. The Asian art is also impressive, and there is also a small collection of paintings. There is no photography allowed, so give yourself enough time to soak everything in! There is a lovely rooftop garden where you could sit and allow your brain to recover!

“Could have spent all day here and the cafe is the best for lunch!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

Warning - do not go here before seeing the Book of Kells or you will say 'Eh, I saw much more impressive books at Beatty". And lunch at the cafe is the best!

“Ancient Manuscripts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

The Chester Beatty Library, at Dublin Castle has a pretty large collection of ancient religious texts, including the earliest known copies of the four Gospels, some Egyptian papyrus texts, Asian artwork and interesting paraphernalia related to book binding. Very impressive. Admission is free. No photography is allowed. There are lockers adjacent to the front desk where belongings can be stored - 1 euro.
There are benches surrounding the lawn outside the library that are great for a picnic lunch (like from the nearby Leo Burdock's)
