“Modern Hotel in Old Castle”
Reviewed July 12, 2008

We spent only one night at the Clontarf Hotel, but we absolutely loved it. The Hotel is situated in a nice and quiet residential area, about 10 minutes away from the main city centre. The facade is of a 16th century castle, but the rooms have a wonderful modern and cozy style. The bathroom was super clean and nice with a big and spacious shower. The staff has been more than helpful offering more than one time to call us a taxi if we needed it. We booked through the Hotel's web site and the rate we found included breakfast. The buffet offered plenty of foods, cereal, fresh coffee or tea, eggs, Irish pudding, fresh fruit, breads and pastries. We didn't have the chance to try the restaurant but we did stop at the bar and the place was nice and and the staff was friendly. We wish we could have spent a little more time there, but we will definitely recommend this place to our friends!!

This castle is very cool and chic. The room was amazing, with the most comfortable beds and a really nice size bathroom. We had a large window to open for air and really enjoyed our stay there.

It's about a 15 minute cab ride from downtown Dublin, but if don't want to go too far, they have a great bar area that we hung out in one night. Lots of activity at the hotel, but the room was still very quiet.

It was a random weekend trip that we took and didn't really know what was the 'must see', but the hotel arranged for a tour of Wicklow County and had the bus pick us up from the hotel. It was the perfect day and we saw so much.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel to others. Not many little children were there, more for adults to enjoy.

Excellent hotel with excellent front of house staff, particularly Carmen. I decided, at the last minute, to surprise my girlfriend with flowers in our room. I called the hotel on the morning we were due to arrive and, in spite of the very late notice, Carmen was able to arrange for a fantastic bunch of flowers (of the exact type requested) to be waiting in our room. Very resonably priced too. We would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I had a fantastic romantic long weekend at the hotel at the beginning of June.

We had a four poster room. The most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. On our 3rd day we had intended an early start for sight seeing but only woke up at 9.45am, we were dead to the world!

Breakfast lovely. If you wanted poached or fried eggs they made them fresh, other items from the buffet -all of it very nice and plentiful.

On our first night our flight had been delayed and only made it to the hotel just after midnight sadly the bar had closed.

When we did make it to the bar the staff were great, as was everyone we met.

Hard to find fault with Clontarf Castle. Lovely place.

On one of the evenings we went for a "casual" meal after a days sightseeing - Captain Americas on Grafton St, opposite Next and Monsoon. Fantastic place, great food, excellent staff. Sadly the following night on the "dressed up" night we chose an Italian place called Pacino's (Tapas restaurant also in the basement). Food was a huge disappointment and totally wrong choice but you can't win em all.

Loved out stay in Ireland - did the sighseeing stuff - Gunniness brewery, Jamesons distillery etc. Highly recommend the Dublin bus tour and well worth making time to visit Kilmainham Gaol.

Hotel excellent, would love to go again anytime.

  • Liked — The heavenly bed
  • Disliked — Shame it didn't have a spa.

I loved everything about this hotel. The executive room was so comfortable that I had the first uninterrupted night's sleep in months. The four-poster was impressive, the bathroom was luxurious and the reception staff were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. One staff member even printed details of the Dublin Viking festival from the internet for us when he heard we were interested.

The food from the Farenheight Grill was exceptional and justified its high price. The only problem we had was with our wi-fi access but this was sorted out quite quickly.

I will definately go back when I have the opportunity.

  • Liked — the luxury of the room
  • Disliked — only the minor problem with the wifi

Just returned from a stay at the Clontarf Castle Hotel, and while it wasn't a horrible experience, we did expect so much more from a hotel that bills itself as 4-star. Visually, this is a beautiful property and the rooms are nicely decorated and modern. It's also a very clean hotel.

But that's really where it all ends. I guess we just expected more guest ammenities for a place billing itself as a luxury hotel. After several days staying at homey B&Bs we were expecting more of a pampered feel once we got to Dublin.

Unfortunately, what we discovered was a level of service you might find from a business travelers hotel, rather than a tourist holiday destination. This place could learn a few things from, say the Ritz Carlton chain, when it comes to customer service.

Here were some of the things that disappointed us about our stay:

1. Woman at the front desk was borderline rude at check-in, and laughed at my wife sarcastically when called to ask how to turn on the freaking lights in the room. Seems you need your room card to activate the lighting, something we had never seen in a hotel before. To be honest, she made us feel like fools that we didn't just know that without asking.

3. After getting lost trying to find the hotel, we arrived after 9 and were exhausted from our travels. Considering that, we decided not to make the 20 minute journey into the city center and attempted to order room service, But even though it said on the room service menu that bar food was available until 11:30 p.m., the rude woman at the desk told us they stopped serving at 9 for some reason that evening. No effort was made on her part to try and offer us other options, so we ended up lugging our tired bodies into the city center.

2. No pool, no spa, and a sub-standard workout room. No robes in the rooms. And poor air conditioning. Again, maybe these things are OK for a business hotel, but this was sold to us as a place to spend your holiday in "luxury."

3. We didn't eat at any of the restaurants in the evening, but breakfast (which was included in our rate) was horrible on all levels. Eggs were undercooked and had an odd taste, and service as sub-par. Took forever to have a coffee cup re-filled. Food trays were also not kept well-stocked for the buffet.

4. Location! This hotel is located in a leafy Dublin suburb. Looks like a very nice place to live, but it's really a long way from all of the Dublin attractions. One way in a taxi to the city center costs about 15 Euro. The bus line is close by, but buses in Dublin only run until 11 p.m., so if you want to followup dinner with a pub crawl, you better plan on a taxi ride back. Would not suggest driving into the city: traffic and parking are a nightmare!

Overall, I'd have to say that Contarf Castle Hotel is just an average place to stay, So, if you can get a good rate, it's an OK place for a good night's sleep. But just don't expect a luxury hotel experience. It doesn't exist here.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for your review on Trip Advisor.

We appreciate all kinds of feedback from our guests as it allows us to improve our services and guarantee a high level of professionalism.

Clontarf Castle Hotel is a four star deluxe property which has recently completed a €10 million refurbishment. Dating back to the 12th century, this castle is located in the leafy suburbs of Clontarf which is only 2 miles from city centre and 5 miles from Dublin Airport.

Indeed we do not have a swimming pool or a spa, however I am pleased to confirm we are located just 5 minutes from Westwood Gym which has an Olympic sized swimming pool as well as spa facilities.

My apologies for any inconvenience caused throughout your stay and once again, thank you for your review. I will most certainly pass on all of your feedback to management and very much hope that you return to Clontarf Castle Hotel again in the future.

Kind regards,
