“Nice, quaint, central, hotel”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

It is almost unfair to write a review based on a one night stay, but we enjoyed our stay. Located north of the river, but central to the city. From outside one gets the sense that it is going to be an old place, but we ended up in the "executive suites" which meant that we went for a long walk through the older part of the hotel where we caught an elevator to our quiet, modern room. It was clean, sufficiently roomy and comfortable. The exercise room was adequate looking but I did not have time to try it out. The little contact that we had with staff was all satisfactory. Since we had to leave early we asked for an early breakfast. We arrived in the lobby early, with our bags and no one seemed to be around! Exactly at the appointed moment, one of the staff appeared with our breakfast. We were impressed and satisfied with our entire experience.

Room Tip: Upper "executive suites" floorwas a quiet winner for us.

We arrived for the weekend and from the minute we walked in to reception we knew it wasn't going to meet our expectations. The receptionist 'Abs' was efficient but he looked scruffy and was not overly friendly. We were allocated a room on the 4th floor at the side of the hotel. The room was clean but there were other things about the room that were unacceptable. The flooring was a mixture of laminate and carpet, the carpet was very stained and looked unclean. The bedside lamps had seen better days and needed replaced and the net curtains on the windows were stained and grey. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls in parts and there were tea stains all over. We were so disappointed that we went back to 'Abs' at reception and I asked if this was the best he could do for us. Abs didn't reply to me he just looked over my shoulder and beckoned to another staff member (who seemed to be the duty manager) to deal with our query. I explained how disappointed we were and he said he would find us a better room. He was helpful and sympathetic and we were upgraded to The Claddagh 'suite' - we went to our new room which was massive but again it was just a bigger room with the same tired shabby furnishings and stained carpet. We decided at this point to make it a 1 night stay instead of the 2 we'd planned and headed to the bar for a drink and something to eat. We waited ages for the food to arrive and when it did it was again like the rest of the hotel very poor. This hotel markets itself as a boutique hotel, however there is nothing boutique about it. The price we paid was tripled because of an event at Croke park which makes it even harder to accept. The 2 good things are location and it's clean enough but overall shabby, tired and in desperate need of a refurb.

This was not my favorite hotel on this trip. That being said, it was a great location, the room was clean and the staff the friendliest we encountered in Ireland. I suspect there is remodeling going on and we just got one of the rooms that is still waiting. The biggest issue was the bathroom. Though clean, the shower was downright weird. The shower curtain didn't reach all the way to the floor, so the water splashed out all over the bathroom floor. The couple we were with did not have this issue which is what made me think this room still needs to be update.
We had a very early departure - 5:30am - and they had breakfast foods out for us when we arrived in the lobby. Because of the great service and cleanliness I gave this hotel 4 stars, only deducting 1 star for the funky shower which hopefully is soon to be remedied, if it isn't already.

Worst service I have ever had the misfortune of receiving. The food in the hotel restaurant was awful. The Bailey's cheesecake had a skin on it and the base of it was soggy and grey. The chips seemed as if they were refried from earlier as the chips at lunch were much nicer. At checkout they tried to charge us for a fry breakfast on a day we didn't even stay in the hotel. The shower lacked the ability of maintaining a constant temperature and I will never be staying there again.

We stayed here June 1, -thru june 9. The staff very friendly and helpful especially with directions to sightseeing. Hotel located on Upper O"Connell st and walking distance to many sights and places. Breakfast buffet was included and was very good selection of meats, eggs, fruits and cereals. Our room was on the 2nd floor and away from street noise. Rooms were a little small with good light. Bathrooms a little on the small size. Weather was not great, rain and cold, not the hotel's fault . The restaurant was cozy, could have used a menu with more/better selections. Service in restaurant was slow at times.

All in all a good value for the money.

Room Tip: main lobby is floor 0, first floor is actually one floor up, ask for rear rooms so you don't hea...
