“Drunken Irish”

Our room was on ground level, 2 doors away from Check-in. The room was very spacious and well maintained. The problem is the Nightclub and Fire Alarm. Every (morning) between 2:30-5:00 a.m., the Nightclub patrons would empty out onto the street. Imagine hundreds of young, drunken Irish people, screaming, laughing, singing, and talking! Needless to say, we tried to sleep late every day, but at 8:00 a.m., the hotel's Fire Alarms would sound! This happened 3 of the 4 nights we stayed! No explanation . . . no apologies . . . NOTHING! Never again!!! I wouldn't send my worst enemy to stay in this place! The bright side: the Italian restaurant next door is very good!

The Harcourt Hotel needs a course in tourism and hospitality management! We picked the Harcourt because it was advertised as the former home of George Bernard Shaw -- a notion that delighted us. When we arrived, we were actually housed in a building two doors down that had been acquired by the Harcourt, no more the home of GBS than the man in the moon! Adding insult to injury, there was no room service. If we wanted a bucket of ice, we had to leave our building, walk in the rain two doors down and get it from the bar. If the bar was closed we had to walk four doors down and get it from the nightclub. We were told that the hotel fans were all checked out and later found that the hotel owns only one fan and that it was in the manager's office. When we needed a plunger we were told the hotel doesn't own one, but maintenance will be there in two days! The front desk staff was dour and unhelpful, and the notion of paying before check-in, which seemed odd at the time, is now perfectly clear! No one would willingly pay for such nonsense!

Dublin is an expensive place to visit, and the Harcourt is not an expensive hotel. It is also in a great location--walking distance to Grafton Street, Trinity College, even Temple Bar. Our rooms were clean. Now the weaknesses: as others have pointed out, there is no early check in. We asked to check our bags and waited for awhile before that happened. When we arrived the front desk was understaffed--the one clerk was giving interminable directions to someone who was driving there from the airport--and no one else was working the desk, so hordes of people were waiting to be taken care of. We had heard about the nightclub so asked if we could have a quiet room. We were assured in no uncertain terms that our room was quiet. It was right over the nightclub and was incredibly noisy two of the three nights we stayed there. The weather was quite hot and we had to keep the windows open. If you stay there, make sure to bring earplugs! Work on the tram is done, so no construction problems. There is no parking, so we turned in our rental car early and were very glad we did. The restaurant next door is good.
