I genuinely liked this hotel and will almost certainly go there again next time I am in Dublin. It is superbly located, just a few mins walk from Baggot Street (pubs/restaurants), Grafton Street (main shopping street) and St Stephens Green and shares Merion Square with the superb National Gallery of Ireland and the Natural History Museum. Breakfast buffet was good, and the smoked salmon salad I had in the bar for lunch was excellent. The only issues I had with my room 216, were that the thermostat on the air con was broken which stopped the heat of the room rise above 15 degrees, however, when I called reception, they promptly provided a fan heater which heated the room to a far more pleasant temperature very quickly. My other gripes were that the extractor fan in the bathroom was broken, there was an indelible scuff mark in the bath and I felt that for a 4* hotel, we should have been provided with bath robes. I also felt they were a little mean with regard to the size and the quantity of the towels they provided. In brief, I enjoyed my stay, will stay there again but they need to keep abreast of room maintenance.

Room Tip: Fairly busy road to the front of the hotel so request a room away from the road.

This is a beautiful old, majestic and classical building. Probably when it was built a landmark in Dublin. There are old, majestic and classical buildings which keep their class with upkeep and renovations, while maintaining the appearance of being old and classical. Unfortunately, this is not one of them - it is mostly old. The room, while spacious enough, was so so, with a bathroom that was definately in need of an update. If there's one thing that is annoying is the hum of a central air conditioner that can not be shut off - and that is exactly what the room had - one of those noises that gets louder and louder the later it gets and you haven't fallen asleep yet. Not to mention the swinging doors between the rooms and the vestibule of the lift - which were badly in need of oil and every time someone pushed them open sounded like a cat screeching. Speaking of lifts - the first day when I wanted to go down for breakfast, they were both out of order. Don't mind walking stairs, but to go down, up and down again 5 flights of stairs is not something one wants to do when they have to make a meeting at 9.00 AM.
All in all, a nice place that could look like an antique shop, but could use a little bit of an refurbishing/update to get the class that such a beautiful building deserves.

Grand hotel in Dublin. Hotel is in a great location one block from Merrion Square, AirCoach bus from airport stops just one block from hotel. Hotel staff were friendly and very helpful. Rooms were comfortable and well appointed. I did not use the restaurant at all so cannot comment on that. But I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Needs some upgrading but is well located, very friendly staff, food average, drink prices ok, good value for a city centre hotel. Car Park is not located beside the hotel. Within walking distance of main shopping street.

We arrived at this hotel bedraggled after a long flight one morning and were astonished to be completely ignored by the only person on duty at the front desk. For a full fifteen minutes she managed to keep herself busy pulling out posies from a back room to put on the counter for some wedding booking. Not a word of apology. Also on the negative side, room service did include unexpected entry by the maids, who had not been taught to knock loudly. No effective method of locking the door from the inside that was operational.
Breakfasts were good with the exception of the most greasy and unpalatable sausages we have ever encountered. One needs to know that the obliging staff there will make you a double espresso and even turn you out poached eggs to order if you ask.
On the positve side, another young lady at the front desk was absolutely first-rate as were the waiters in the bar. There we downed well-pulled pints of Guinness and very generous serves of beef and Guinness stew. The location of the hotel is excellent.

Room Tip: A room at the back to avoid noise

I've stayed in the Davenport a few times now without writing a review. As you can guess from the fact I keep coming back I like it. I don't have to queue to check in which might seem like a small thing but it always irritates me if I do. The breakfast is buffet style with a good range of hot and cold. I find the rooms comfortable and sleep like a log. In summer the air conditioning is sensitive to my needs. The location is central. The staff are helpful. In short, as my title says, it works for me.

Room Tip: In Summer the Ginger Man can be noisy with drinkers outside and so a quiter time is had at the back.
